GAMEDAY: MEN'S SOCCER VS. NJCU, 4PM

9/13/2017 10:00:00 AM

The College of Staten Island men's soccer team is back in action this afternoon, looking to preserve its winning streak as they host New Jersey City University at the CSI Soccer Complex at 4pm.  CSI is 3-1 and have won three in a row, while the Gothic Knights recently had their win streak snapped but are still undefeated on the year at 3-0-1.

CSI vs. NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY AT-A-GLANCE
Matchup:  CSI (3-1) vs. New Jersey City University (3-0-1)
Where: CSI Soccer Complex - 2800 Victory Boulevard, Staten Island, NY
All-Time Series:  NJCU leads, 18-8-1
Players to Watch (CSI): CSI has been getting a balanced attack of late and are now sporting two goals apiece from senior Dardan Nika, who leads the team with 16 shots and freshmen Bryant Navarro and Joe Bolella.  Navarro has two game-winning goals this season to lead the pack in that category.  On that back line look for CUNYAC Defender of the Week Erick Conde to help hold things down along with freshmen duo Wilson Quintero and Miguel Morales.  Quintero leads the team with 354 minutes logged thus far.
Players to Watch (NJCU):  Two goals each from Howie Trinidade and Theo Sanoh are leading the charge offensively, while midfielder and playmaker Jose Salazar has been electric with a goal and three assists so far in the early stages.  Sanoh has had the best looks, with 20 shots fired including 10 on net.  The Gothic Knights have been stout defensively, having allowed just one goal thus far.  Look for Mike Almeida and Angelo Romano to make their fifth consecutive starts on that back line today, while keeper Eric Lopes Silva, who sports a .933 save percentage is expected to make the start in net.
News and Notes:  A rich series, these teams have been meeting since 1978, with NJCU holding an all-time 18-8-1 advantage.  The Dolphins have had much better success at home against NJCU (6-6) than on the road (2-12-1), and the Dolphins have won two out of the last three meetings.  In their last game played here, CSI took a 6-1 win over the Knights back in 2015, equaling their most lop-sided win in the series.  Last year, however, NJCU got even, using a Theo Sanoh goal in the 23rd minute to push a 1-0 lead across to a win.  NJCU out-shot CSI in that contest, 13-8 (7-3 on goal).  NJCU had their 293-minute shutout streak to open the season broken on Monday, in a 1-1 tie with Brooklyn College. Their  red-hot start is a far cry from how they finished a year ago, when they went 0-9-1 in their final 10 games.  The Dolphins are coming off of a 3-1 win over Lasell College in Massachusetts, their third win in a row.  After putting up just two shots in their opening game of the year against Wisconsin-Platteville, CSI has put up 76 shots in their last three games, or an average of 25.3 per contest.  The Dolphins, however, are having a very difficult time of finding their targets, totaling just 24 of those shots on goal or 32%.
