Amherst, MA | Despite a statistically-even afternoon, the College of Staten Island men's soccer saw themselves as the victim of a heavy loss, falling the Amherst by a 4-0 count ad part of non-league play this afternoon. CSi fell to 12-4 overall with the loss while Amherst improved to 8-3-1.
A red-hot start for the Mammoths was all they needed to ride this game to a win. CSI got the first shot on goal, but after Bernie White made a save on CSI's
Bryant Navarro, AC earned a quick corner kick, and right after, Will Cohen registered an unassisted goal just 2:38 into the game, his first of the season, to give the Mammoths an early 1-0 lead.
A reeling CSI was then victimized just 1:52 later. German Giammattei was able to converge on a Fikayo Ajayi pass and bury one in past CSI keeper
Christian Carucci, making in a 2-0 game just 4:30 into play.
From there, both teams took turns controlling play, and getting shots across. CSI took a total of nine shots after the two goals were scored and Amherst would fire away nine of their own as well. At one point, CSI got off three straight shots, but right after CSI's
Macki Dougoune fired one high, Amherst took over and at 38:48, Luke Nguyen put in his fifth of the season after a Bryce Johnson cross, making it a 3-0 game with just 6:12 remaining in the first stanza.
From there, AC resigned to play tighter defense. CSI got off eight shots, but only one was on target. Meanwhile, the Mammoths seemed to hammer the nail in when Dylan Steele scored a goal with just 5:04 to go, capping the game at 4-0 with only Amherst's second shot on frame in the half.
At the end of 90, the shots were even at 19-19, as were corner kicks, 4-4, and fouls at 16-16. Carucci made eight saves in defeat for CSI, while Bernie White (six saves) shared the shutout with Will Dunne. Ajayi led all Mammoths with four shots.
CSI now has just two games remaining on their regular season slate. Next up, they will face off against Baruch College on Wednesday, October 17, at 3:30pm, in what will be their CUNYAC finale.
