GAMEDAY: MEN'S SOCCER @ BROOKLYN, 4PM

10/3/2018 8:51:00 AM

The College of Staten Island men's soccer team is coming off of their biggest win in program history, and they will be taking their undefeated CUNYAC record with them when they travel to Brooklyn College to take on the Bulldogs in a mid-season conference test, scheduled for 4pm.

CSI VS. BROOKLYN COLLEGE AT-A-GLANCE
Matchup:  CSI (8-3, 4-0 CUNYAC)  vs. Brooklyn College 2-10, 2-1 CUNYAC)
Where: Brooklyn College Field - 2900 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY
All-Time Series: CSI leads, 19-9-1
Last Meeting: September 30, 2017 - Brooklyn won, 2-1
Players to Watch (CSI): The goals are coming fast and furious for the Dolphins these past few weeks and the usual suspects are getting it done.  Bryant Navarro now leads the squad with 12 goals this season, adding three helpers, while fellow sophomore Joe Bolella is next in line with 10 goals.  Perhaps no one has been more dynamic, however, than Philip Lefkowitz, who has earned eight goals and a team-best 10 assists.  Primarily in a reserve role Breny Salas has seven goals and six assists and has been in the middle of the fray with 19 shots this season.  Look for a taught back-line of Erick Conde, Miguel Morales and Wilson Quintero to help keep the Brooklyn attack in line.  Christian Carucci has been CSI's primary goalkeeper this season, but has missed the last two games.  He boasts a 6-2 record with a team best .654 save percentage.
Players to Watch (BC): The Bulldogs have been strapped for offense, having scored only eight goals this season.  Brian Navarrete and a Carlos Calzadilla share the team lead with two goals, while four other Bulldogs have registered one each.  Navarrete leads all with 16 shots taken, eight more than Daniel Gurov and Stewart Bailon who are next in line.  Steve Sabogal leads the defense and the midfield and will be charged with keeping CSI off the register.  BC goes with a goalkeeper-by-committee approach.  Former CSI keeper Balint Barabas has earned the most time and has a .623 save percentage and a 3.31 goals-against-average.  Arturo Zaraza has gotten four starts, making 25 saves, but his goals-against in a hefty 6.25.
News & Notes: Brooklyn College broke a five-game winless streak over CSI last year by beating them, 2-1, in Brooklyn.  Prior to that, CSI was 4-0-1 in their last five over Brooklyn, by a combined 13-6 score.  CSI has had pretty good success, however, over the years in Brooklyn, sporting an 8-3-1 overall mark since 1977.  Before last year's game, Brooklyn had not beaten CSI in Brooklyn since 2000.  The team's share just one common opponent this season in York College.  Brooklyn took a 2-1 win over York, while the Dolphins set a CSI single game record by defeating the Cardinals, 16-1, on Saturday.  The Dolphins are ranked No. 1 in the nation in scoring offense, averaging five goals per game and scoring 55 goals in total.  They also lead the nation in assists per game (3.82) and shots on goal per game (13.09).  Bryant Navarro is fifth in the nation in total goals with 12, and Philip Lefkowitz is second in the nation in assists with 10.  This does not bode well for Brooklyn, who are only averaging 0.67 goals per game, and have been shut out eight times.
