Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island men's soccer team returned home to the CSI Soccer Complex after a three-game road swing and were sharp from start to finish in a 4-0 win over SUNY - Cobleskill, their second shutout win by that same score in the last four days. The win moved CSI to 4-2 this season, while the Tigers fell to 1-4.
CSI was able to ride the game today on the strength of a strong first half, building up a 3-0 lead by intermission, but first they needed to survive a frenzied attack in the opening minutes from the Tigers. Although shots were limited, the Tigers were able to gain entry into the CSI defensive third, but could not scratch one past CSI goalkeeper
Christian Carucci.
The game would take a turn, however, in the eighth minute.
Breny Salas, who turned in a fantastic game on the wing, was able to speed through a defender down the right sideline, and fed a pass in the middle to a streaking
Bryant Navarro, and CSI's leading scorer fired a rocket from near the top of the box passed a sprawling Benjamin Augar to give CSI a 1-0 edge at the 8:47 mark.
CSI continued to get the better of play, and despite a couple of attempts via the wing by the Tigers, CSI was winning balls in the midfield and turning them upfield into chances. In the 15th minute, Navarro capitalized again, this time by being in the right place at the right time. Salas would fire a cannon in towards goal, forcing Augar to make a diving stop. The ball skipped away and there to clean up the mess was Navarro who tucked one in from point-blank range to give CSI a 2-0 edge at 15:11.
Cobleskill started to get fresh legs into the game, making a total of 10 subs for every field position on the pitch. With essentially a second team in the game, minus the keeper, CSI took a 3-0 lead, as their substitute,
Mike Arellanes was able to converge on a ball that was skied well high in the air. He side-stepped one defender and hit a ball with full power from the top of the box that Augar had no chance on, staking CSI to a 3-0 lead with just 10 seconds to go in the stanza.
CSI enjoyed a 9-5 edge in shots in the opening period, and they would go on to to out-shoot Cobleskill by a 12-4 count in the second, seriously limiting the Tigers' chances. The Tigers did not register a single shot on goal, and both teams brought waves of substitutes into the game in the second stanza.
Amidst the changes, CSI added an insurance tally late in the 71st minute.
Joe Bolella scored his second of the year, accepting a short pass from substitute
Alex Sosa at the top of the goal box and sending another shot on net to get through.
CSI led the final shot count, 21-9 (7-2 on goal), and took four corners to the Tigers' one. Cautions were issued to Patrick McGovern and Gregoire Diedhiou for the Tigers and
Erick Conde of the Dolphins. Carucci made a pair of saves for his second-straight shutout.
Now on a two-game skein, CSI will prep for it's CUNYAC-opener on Wednesday, September 19, when they travel to face City College of New York at Randall's Island at 4pm.
