New York, NY | The College of Staten Island men's soccer unit won for the third-straight time this afternoon, blowing by City College of New York by a 9-0 count as part of CUNYAC play at Randall's Island. CSI moved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the CUNYAC with the lop-sided win, while the Beavers fell to 0-4-1, 0-1, respectively.
Today's game was played on a slanted field from the get-go, as the Dolphins were able to dominate possession and dictate play from start to finish. It took some time, but CSI was able to register a little over a third of the way into the first half, and from there they kept their foot on the gas until the closing minutes.
Bryant Ibarra was the early star in this one, as the CCNY keeper was busy, making six saves through the first 15 minutes to keep CSI off of the board. But CSI was persistent, and in the 16th minute,
Philip Lefkowitz scored his third of the season, going in unassisted to give CSI the lead at 16:50.
After three more Ibarra saves, it was time for
Carlos Montesinos to get on the board, and he connected on a shot after a
Wilson Quintero pass sprung him loose, making it 2-0 in the 23rd minute. Before the first half closed, CSI was able to register again at 36:02, this time on a goal by CSI leading-scorer
Bryant Navarro, tallying off of a
Mike Arellanes feeder.
By halftime, CSi had a whopping 25-1 lead in shots and had taken nine corner kicks to CCNY's none.
The Dolphins would only attempt 13 more shots in the second half, but a little less than half were good for goals as CSI would tally six times. The first three came off of the foot of sophomore
Joe Bolella. The natural hat-trick started in the 49th minute to make it 4-0, and Bolella was signal again in the 56th and 60th minutes again.
Three different goal-scorers would tally from there for the Dolphins.
Emmanuel Gbemudu scored his second collegiate goal in the 66th minute on an assist by
Breny Salas, and then Salas would get his own goal six minutes later in the 72nd minute of the game. To tidy up the scoring,
Chris Vendra woyld score in the 82nd minute off of a CCNY penalty, setting up for a penalty kick. For Vendra, it was his first collegiate goal.
CSI led the final shot count, 38-2 (26-0 on goal), and held a 10-0 lead in corner kicks. Ibarra made 17 saves for CCNY. The shutout for CSI ran their shutout streak to three-straight games, over which CSI has out-scored their opponents, 17-0. The win was CSI's biggest over CCNY of all-time as CSI improved to just 10-32-3 all-time against the Beavers.
The Dolphins will continue their CUNYAC slate on Saturday, when they play host to John Jay College at the CSI Soccer Complex at 1pm. The showdown has been tabbed as the CUNYAC Game of the Week.
