Brooklyn, NY | The College of Staten Island men's soccer team canned four early goals, then cruised the rest of the way in what was a 5-0 conference win over home Medgar Evers College in a game played at Kingsborough Community College. CSI improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in CUNYAC play with the win, while the Cougars fell to 0-7, 0-3, respectively.
CSI got the game-winner early, scoring on their first official shot on goal.
Philip Lefkowitz scored the first of three assists today, when his throw in at 3:44 found the waiting head of leading goal-scorer
Joe Bolella, who tucked the ball in perfectly to stake the Dolphins to a 1-0 lead.
After three more CSI attacks failed to find the back of the net,
Chris Vendra made one count, threading a soft touch pass to
Bryant Navarrowho put his first goal in. Just 1:39 later, Navarro got another, accepting a Lefkowitz pass and putting one in against MEC keeper Carl Obesissant to give CSI a 3-0 lead after just over 15 minutes.
CSI's final first half tally would come in the 28th minute, another Navarro tally off of another Lefkowitz assist, giving him the natural hat trick. After a 14-3 edge in first-half shots, CSI led, 4-0.
The Dolphins kept up the intensity in the second stanza, out-shooting the Cougars, 14-4 but six saves kept CSI at bay until the 76th minute when
Jhair Larrea connected on his first goal, converging on a goal on a feeder from
Breny Salas, capping the scoring with just a little over 14 minutes to play.
The road team would finish with a 28-7 edge in shots (14-2 on goal) and CSI enjoyed a 12-3 edge in corners. Lefkowitz would finish with a game-high five shots and his three assists were a career single-game high. CSI keeper
Jake Foeldes took his first win of the season and his first since the 2016 season, stopping two shots in the shutout win.
CSI will continue their CUNYAC schedule when they play host to York College Saturday afternoon at 12 Noon at the CSI Soccer Complex.
