Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

SENIORS SHINE AS DOLPHINS STORM PAST CCNY, 4-0

Story Links

Staten Island, NY  |  The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team hosted Senior Day at the CSI Soccer Complex today recognizing their five graduating players ahead of their matchup with the CCNY Beavers.  Chris Vendra, Carlos Montesinos, Erick Conde, Philip Lefkowitz, and team captain Ryan Layman were all presented with commemorative frames during a pregame ceremony that recounted their time as Dolphins.  Additionally, Team IMPACT player Anthony Del Re was presented with his own frame as he graduates from the Team IMPACT program this year as well.  Once the action got underway, the Dolphins seized immediate control on two Lefkowitz goals in the opening minutes never looking back en route to a 4-0 victory.  CSI moves to 7-5-1 with the win and CCNY drops to 2-11.

The Dolphins wasted absolutely no time getting on the scoreboard early as Lefkowitz charged into the box off of a feed from Daniel Angulo on his way to scoring the game's first goal only 45 seconds into the match.  Lefkowitz then got back into the goal column just eleven minutes later when he was assisted by fellow senior Vendra on his seventh goal of the season.

Both teams failed to score for the remainder of the half with the Dolphins tallying a total of eight shots to the Beavers three.  The Dolphins also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and the pair of goals they scored in the opening half was not indicative of how many quality scoring chances they had.  However, the Beavers had successfully stayed within striking distance heading into the second half down 2-0.

When play resumed following the halftime break it was more of the same as the Dolphins continued to generate high-quality scoring chances while the Beavers struggled to put any pressure on CSI defensively.  Despite the numerous opportunities for the Dolphins, they failed to cash in for the first forty minutes of half number two while finding themselves plagued by several costly offsides calls along the way.

It was in the 87' that the attack finally broke through with the third score of the game as Montesinos found the back of the net for the fourth time this season off the helper from Breny Salas.  Ahead 3-0 it didn't take Montesinos long to return the favor as he would assist Salas on his first goal of the season less than three minutes later.  The first of the year for Salas would cap off the scoring as the final minute and a half ticked off the clock with CSI coming away victorious 4-0.

The seniors for CSI shined in this game as the defense anchored by Conde and Layman did not allow the Beavers any threatening chance throughout the entirety of the match.  On the attack, Lefkowitz scored a pair to give him a team-leading seven goals, Montesinos added his fourth goal and an assist, and Vendra registered his second assist of the season.   The Dolphins outshot the Beavers 18-6 and all of the scoring opportunities belonged to them.  The win also maintains their perfect record against the CUNYAC this season as the Dolphins move to 6-0 against their former conference.

Next up for CSI is the second of three-straight games against a CUNYAC opponent when they take on John Jay College.  They will travel to Randall's Island to face the Bloodhounds on Wednesday with kickoff coming at 3:30.
