New York, NY | Own goals are a rare instance in soccer, and the College of Staten Island benefited from a pair of them in a 2-0 win over John Jay College in play at Randall's Island. The win, CSI's second-straight, lifted the Dolphins to 8-5-1 overall, while the Bloodhounds fell to 5-10.
CSI did have the better of play in the first half, owning the ball in spurts and living near the John Jay end in the opening minutes. After several chances, CSI got their first official shot on frame in the 13th minute, an attempt by
Philip Lefkowitz that was turned aside by Steven Towler. CSI keeper
Christian Carucci did the same on a Mergim Mehmeti attempt as well as play tempered. Despite several good looks, including eight first-half corner kick attenpts CSI was held off of the scoreboard, as Towler would make another save in the 36th minute on a header from
Breny Salas. Carucci
At the half CSI had a slim, 5-3, lead in shots, but JJC did do well to find the frame, putting all of their shots on target, forcing three Carucci saves.
Defense took center stage in the second half, as both teams struggled in the final third of the field. The frame's first shot would not occur until the 60th minute, a header by
Wilson Quintero that sailed high. With CSI still pressing, JJC made their first defensive error just three minutes later, as in the 63rd minute, a miscue saw the ball land in the net to give CSI a 1-0 lead via the own goal that got past Towler.
A dejected JJC side relented a bit defensively, and CSI was able to get more shots on target, but nothing would find the twine until the 73rd minute, when
Joe Bolella connected off of a free kick, giving them a commanding, 2-0, lead, with just 17:29 to play.
CSI's defense stiffened from there, allowing only a single shot down the stretch to close the game with the 2-0 final.
CSI led the final shot count, 12-5 (7-4 on goal).
Jake Foeldes came on in the second half for CSI, making two saves to preserve the shutout. The Dolphins finished with an 11-2 edge in corner kicks and were whistled for 16 fouls to JJC's 9.
