Staten Island, NY | On a day when the Dolphins honored Anthony Del Re and his family on Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Awareness Night, the College of Staten Island Men's Soccer team registered their third-straight win, blanking Brooklyn College, 2-0. The Dolphins, lifted to 4-3-1 overall, while Brooklyn fell to 1-9.
Prior to kick-off, CSI honored seven-year old Anthony Del Re, an honorary member of the team since 2017, presenting he and his family with a check for $500 for his family and the Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Foundation. A rare disease that affects bone marrow, pancreas, and skeletal formation, Anthony has been battling SDS since infancy, and through Team IMPACT, connected with CSI soccer and has been a part of the CSI family ever since. The Dolphins gave Del Re and his family a win to boot, powered by two second-half goals to extend their unbeaten streak to four games.
In a defensive-laden first half where temperatures reached the low-90's, neither team registered any golden chances in the opening frame as both teams tightened up in their defensive third of the field, frustrating the other side with effective tackling and the break-up of several crosses in the box. BC keeper Lorenzo Davies made just a pair of saves in the first frame, the second on a short shot by
Philip Lefkowitz who tried to poke one through. BC meanwhile did not generate a lot of offense, choosing to send balls into open space only to be stymied by the CSI defense. CSI starting keeper
Jake Foeldes was active but made just a single save 16 minutes into the half on a shot attempt by Alex Zecena.
After a 15-minute rest period, both teams appeared energized by the halftime break, coming out and forcing play offensively. CSI was able to take advantage. Despite not registering a shot, a deep rush saw
Breny Salas place a cross into the box that was deflected by a BC defender. The ricochet got past Davies for what was an own goal, giving the Dolphins a 1-0 lead just 5:02 into the second half. CSI's
Joe Bolella almost got to the loose ball before it trickled into the net.
From there, BC was forced to press the issue, and CSI took advantage by using their counterattack. In the 60th minute CSI almost doubled their lead when Lefkowitz rocketed a shot off of Davies and got to his own rebound and ripped one off of the crossbar and down before the ball was cleared. A few minutes later,
Carlos Montesinos sent one just inches over the bar from the top of the box.
After several knocks at the door, CSI got their insurance tally in the 82nd minute. Shortly after coming into the game,
Bryant Navarro used his speed to split defenders and put an entry pass into
Lirim Gjonbalaj, who posted his third goal of the season by side-stepping Davies and placing one into an open net. CSI reserve keeper
Christian Carucci needed just one save in the second half to complete the shutout.
CSI finished with a 16-2 edge in shots (9-2 on goal), and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. There were three yellow bookings in the game, two on Brooklyn's Demyan Turiy and Kamil Kosmider and one for CSI's
Asante Carroll.
Now armed with a three-game win streak, four-game unbeaten streak, and a 358-minute shutout streak that dates back to CSI's 1-1 tie with St. Thomas Aquinas College on September 16, CSI will stay within the CUNYAC and face Hunter College at Randall's Island on Saturday, at Noon.
