Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer team moved their undefeated streak to a pair of games and opened up the CUNYAC portion of their schedule with a lopsided, 8-0, victory over visiting Medgar Evers College at the CSI Soccer Complex this afternoon. The win lifted the Dolphins to 2-3-1, while the Cougars fell to 1-5.
Six different goal scorers entered the scoring register today for CSI, as the Dolphins dominated play and made eventful play after play in the final third of the field. After three CSI shots didn't land, including a
Philip Lefkowitz tap that hit the goal post, CSI was able to tally on their fourth shot of the game, as Lefkowitz was sprung on a one-on-one play against MEC keeper Carl-Henry Obeissant on a gorgeous feeder from
Christian Puccio, giving CSI a 1-0 edge just 5:46 into play.
CSI continued to pepper the MEC goal with shots and crossing opportunities that kept Obeissant busy, but the Cougars were able to subside the flurry. The Dolphins, however, were able to double their lead when
Breny Salas crossed a sterling ball in the box that found the head of
Daniel Angulo for his first career goal at 17:25. Midway into the first half, waves of substitutions would come in for CSI, and the fresh legs proved an advantage for CSI. At 25:53,
Jahmali Peterson had his turn, popping one in off the head on a corner kick taken by Lefkowitz that he was able to take to place near the far post.
Moments later, CSI made it 4-0, when Lefkowitz scored his second goal on another rush up the field on a through-ball feeder from
Bryant Navarro.
Play then moved to inside of five minutes to go in the half, and that's when the Dolphins hit a bit of lightning to end the frame. First, at 41:09, Peterson scored his second goal of the game, turning on a pass from Alexis Moran-Navarro. Just 2:08 later,
Bryant Navarro, CSI's leading goal-scorer from a year ago, tallied his first of the season, unassisted off of a MEC turnover at the top of the box. On CSI's very next rush up the field, 24 seconds later,
Jason Aviles was next to register his first of the year coming off of the bench, slamming one home off of an
Asante Carroll cross.
By halftime, CSI owned a 7-0 lead and a 19-4 ege in shots. CSI's scoring certainly slowed in the second frame, but the Dolphins were still able to send waves of pressure to the MEC end, and immediately after CSI's
Javier Campos rocketed a ball off of the crossbar, freshman
Lirim Gjonbalaj was there to clean up the mess and score his first career goal to make an 8-0 score stand. Despite the lopsided final score, MEC reserve keeper, James Hyacinthe, was strong, making five second-half saves.
CSI finished with a 32-5 edge in shots (17-3 on goal), and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Abdul Edwards and Papa Samb were shown yellow cautions for MEC, while Aviles was cautioned for CSI.
Carlos Montesinos led all Dolphins with five total shots.
Jake Foeldes registered his first shutout of the season, making three saves for CSI.
The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to face York College in a 2 pm showdown at Randall's Island.
