New York, NY | The College of Staten Island men's soccer team ran their unbeaten streak up to three games and got their second-straight shutout to boot, putting away York College on the road, 4-0, in play at Randall's Island. CSI leveled their record to 3-3-1 overall with the win, while York fell to 1-8.
The Dolphins certainly dictated play in this one, but strong defensive presence by the Cardinals in the final third of the field frustrated CSI until they finally registered late in the first half, then the Dolphins added plenty of second-half insurance to leave little to doubt.
After several attempts at goal went wide and after a pair of
Philip Lefkowitz shots were blocked, York keeper Jasper McLeod made his first save of the game in the 21st minute off of a
Carlos Montesinos shot. From there, CSI picked up the attack and rallied to get that goal before half.
McLeod would make another pair of saves, but CSI finally hit pay dirt when a late foul in the box awarded CSI a penalty kick opportunity with 41:14 on the clock. Newcomer
Jahmali Peterson, who scored two goals just three days ago against Medgar Evers, spotted up the shot and beat McLeod in the corner of goal to give CSI the critical 1-0 lead going into halftime.
With York now needing to equalize, CSI used their counterattack to try and get some insurance on the board. It took 12:50 into the second half to get on the register again, as
Chris Vendra sent a cross into the box that found an open
Joe Bolella, who crashed one in past McLeod to give CSI the more comfortable, 2-0, cushion.
Despite pressing, York only mustered up a single shot over the next 20 minutes, and then later, with 11:24 to play, a would-be clearance attempt by the York defensive line led to an own goal to give CSI the 3-0 advantage. With the wind out of their sails, York surrendered another with just 2:46 to play, as 2018 CSI leading scorer
Bryant Navarro scored his second of the season on a dazzling dribble into the box past three YC defenders.
CSI would finalize with a 27-5 shot advantage (11-0 on goal) and a 13-3 edge in corner kick opportunities. For CSI,
Jake Foeldes and
Christian Carucci shared the shutout an a day when neither needed an official save. McLeod made seven saves in defeat for York. There were three yellow bookings in the game, with
Mohammedou Sow and
Patrick Longo booked for CSI and Hans Merilan booked for York.
CSI will now be idle until Wednesday, October 2, when they play host to Brooklyn College for a 4:00 pm showdown with the Bulldogs at the CSI Soccer Complex.
