DOLPHINS DROP A PAIR TO ADELPHI ON SENIOR DAY IN FINAL HOME MEET OF THE SEASON

1/18/2020 2:41:00 PM

Staten Island, NY |  The College of Staten Island Swimming & Diving team hosted their final home meet of the season this afternoon, falling to the Panthers of Adelphi University on the men's side,116-93, and 137-64 on the women's side.  The defeat dropped the men to 5-4 and the women fell to 7-5 with the loss.

Today's last meet of the 2019-2020 season at The Tank also marked the final home meet for two CSI Seniors, Victoria Musarella and Peter Carle.  It was late in the meet following the 500-free that both teams took a break from the action to recognize the Dolphins' graduating swimmers.  Both were recognized with a speech recounting their time as members of the team, posed for photos with teammates, coaches and administrators, and received commemorative frames from their time as members of the program.

WOMEN'S MEET
In the 200 medley relay, Adelphi struck first taking 15 of the 17 points scored in the event.  In the 1000-yard freestyle, the Panthers took a commanding 28-5 lead, a lead that soon increased to thirty-six, 44-8, after the 200-yard freestyle.

Trailing big through three events, the deficit grew to 47 after the 50-yard freestyle with the Panthers going up 59-12.  The 200-yard IM that followed saw Adelphi go ahead 73-17 heading into the diving events.

In the one-meter, Adelphi saw their lead grow to 82-21, and the three-meter pushed that lead up another nine points, 91-21.  The 100-yard butterfly that followed earned the Panthers another 14 points to the Dolphins four, and the 100-yard freestyle made it 121-28.

The 100-yard backstroke once again saw Adelphi grab the larger share of the points, and the 500-yard freestyle that proceeded the Senior Day ceremony brought a similar result.  The Dolphins were able to make up some ground the rest of the way, but that only brought them as close as the final score, 137-64.

MEN'S MEET
In the meet's opening event, the 200 medley relay, Adelphi took an early 11-4 lead.  Adelphi increased their advantage to sixteen soon after in the 100-free, going ahead 20-4 through two events.  The Dolphins saw their deficit increase by eight more in the 200-free with the Panthers going ahead 33-9 following event three.

The Dolphins fell behind by six more after completing the 50-yard freestyle with Adelphi scoring 12 in the event to the 6 scored by CSI.  In the final event ahead of diving, the 200-yard IM, the Dolphins deficit grew to 32.

Diving did help the CSI move within striking distance as Xavier Nicholson and Thomas Bridgman dove unopposed to earn 13 points in the one-meter event and another 13 in the three-meter event.  This made the score 54-48 with the 100-yard butterfly up next, but that event put some more distance between CSI and Adelphi with the Panthers upping their lead to 67-53.

A Peter Carle victory in the 100-yard freestyle brought the Dolphins back within nine, 74-65, but the Panthers got back in front by double-digits, 87-70, following the 100-yard backstroke.  Adelphi then padded their lead in the 500-free and put the meet out of reach, now in front by 25.

CSI would pull to within sixteen again following a one-two finish by Michael Stora and Tom Smith in the 100-yard breaststroke, but that wasn't close enough to give the Dolphins an opportunity to win the meet in the 200-yard freestyle relay.  The final result was a 23-point Adelphi victory in the meet, 116-93.

The Dolphins will wrap up the season when they compete in the Metropolitan Swimming Championship which begins on February 20th and runs through February 24th.
