Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

PHYSICAL BATTLE BETWEEN DOLPHINS AND REDHAWKS ENDS IN DRAW, 1-1

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team returned home for the first time in two weeks when they faced the Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks today in their seventh conference match of the season. The Dolphins (3-9-2) took the lead in the seventy-second minute, but the Redhawks (6-4-3) quickly responded with the equalizer just six minutes later. The hotly-contested physical match, which saw eight yellow cards issued and twenty-five fouls committed between the two sides, ended without another goal scored by either team resulting in a 1-1 draw.

KEY MOMENTS

Before either team found the back of the net, Leandro Angulo made what was undoubtedly the most important defensive play of the game when he positioned himself in the center of the vacated CSI goal to prevent the game's first goal on a shot by Ryan Curtis. Less than fifteen minutes later, a costly Redhawks turnover on a Robert Hinds pass toward his own goal was tracked down by Larry Diggs who fired a shot that rolled off the fingertips of Redhawks goalkeeper Jared Gibbons and into the back of the net. However, the 1-0 CSI lead was short-lived as just six minutes later Aaryn Massy connected with Dylan Ruiz on a pass from midfield to set up Ruiz's team-leading fourteenth goal. Tied at one through the first one hundred minutes, each team would have an opportunity to win it in the second overtime. First, it was Tamas Nagy that forced Dolphins goalkeeper Omer Hamzacebi to make a full-extension diving save in the opening seconds of the second overtime period. Just moments later, Shane Siegel fired a shot that hit the fingertips of Gibbons before bouncing off of the crossbar and over, the final scoring chance for either side.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

The Dolphins were outshot by a huge margin, 30-6 overall and 15-4 in shots in goal. For both teams, it was their leading scorer who accounted for each squad's lone goal. For Diggs, he netted his team-best third goal to give the Dolphins the lead. For Ruiz, the equalizing goal was remarkably his fourteenth of the season. The physicality of the match was also reflected on the stat sheet as there were eight yellow cards issued, and at one point during overtime, the Dolphins had six players on the pitch who had already been issued a yellow card.

DOLPHINS OF THE GAME

The Dolphins of the game in today's match were responsible for the game staying scoreless, for giving CSI their first lead, and for ensuring the game stayed tied in overtime.  Leandro Angulo continued to shine defensively as he prevented what would have been the game's first goal with a tremendous defensive play in between the pipes.  Larry Diggs then continued his stellar offensive play with another goal, his second go-ahead goal of the season, that put CSI ahead 1-0.  Lastly, it was Omer Hamzacebi who kept the game even in overtime with a diving save that denied Roberts Wesleyan the game-winning goal.
