DOLPHINS COME UP SHORT IN OVERTIME LOSS TO CHARGERS, 72-64

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball played some thrilling basketball tonight, but they ultimately fell to the University of New Haven Chargers in overtime, 72-64. The loss drops CSI's record to 1-2 overall, while the Chargers improve to 3-0 overall.

KEY MOMENTS

The Dolphins came out of the gates sluggish, down 7-0, in the first two minutes of play. However, a 9-2 run by CSI in the next four minutes of action would tie the game at 9-9, capped by a Gia Esposito three-ball. CSI would head into the second quarter down, 14-11, but a Camryn Debose layup that put gave the Chargers their biggest lead of the half, 31-22. With under 3:30 to play in the first half, CSI would go on a 12-2 run started by an Elizabeth Lofaro three-ball and ending with seven consecutive made free throws by three different Dolphins. At the start of the third quarter, both teams would trade baskets for the first seven minutes as no team led by any more than five points. With the game tied at 47-47 and under three minutes to play in the third, Esposito would hit a three giving CSI a one-point lead. Another free throw followed, and Esposito would then knock down another three, giving the Dolphins a 54-49 lead. The fourth quarter was nothing short of thrilling, as CSI would hold the lead for most of the quarter until an Aurora Deshaies bucket tied the game at 59-59 with under four minutes remaining. Two Debose free throws for the Chargers gave them the 61-59 lead, but with just over a minute to play Kaia Johnson answered with a pull-up jumper from the elbow to tie the game at, 61-61. The game would head into overtime as neither team was able to hit a game-winner. In the overtime period, CSI ultimately came up short as they could not rally back from several big threes by the Chargers on their way to the 72-64 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

It was a tale of two halves in the box score as CSI played exceptionally well in the first half, though, the Chargers would play better in the second half, especially in the overtime period. For the Chargers, it was Brie Pergola who scorched the nets with 24 points on six made threes. For CSI it was Esposito who led them in scoring with 18 points off the bench, hitting four threes in the game. Overall, both teams were fairly even on multiple team stats, though, the Chargers scored 22 second-chance points, to the Dolphins 14 second-chance points, helping the Chargers to their victory.

DOLPHINS OF THE GAME

Today's Dolphins of the game goes to Jenalyse Alarcon and Gia Esposito. Alarcon, registered 15 points and a career-high 21 rebounds (seven on the offensive end) to go along with two blocks and a steal. Esposito helped the Dolphins take the lead with her 18 points and led the team in three-pointers made, shooting 4-8 from range. Kaia Johnson was the only other Dolphin in double figures with 11 points and played tough defense tallying three steals in the game.
