Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team saw yet another game come down to the final minutes tonight as they erased a 20-point second-half deficit to defeat Nyack College, 61-58. The Dolphins evened their record at 2-2 with the victory while the Warriors remained winless on the season falling to 0-3.
KEY MOMENTS
The two teams appeared evenly matched during the opening quarter as a Kristina Arvelo three-pointer tied the game at ten at the midway point of the first. However, the Warriors closed the quarter on a 7-0 run and outscored CSI 23-5 over the next fifteen minutes. Trailing by eighteen at the half, the Dolphins opened the third on an 8-0 run including five more points by Arvelo. Despite the initial surge by the Dolphins to open the third, Nyack was able to stay in front by ten entering the final quarter. The lead for the Warriors remained in double figures with six minutes to play, but from that point forward it was all Dolphins. CSI would score fifteen of the next sixteen points capped off by a game-tying jumper from Kaia Johnson and a go-ahead three-pointer by Elizabeth Lofaro. Ahead by a pair in the closing seconds, CSI committed a turnover that afforded the Nyack one last opportunity to tie, but the Warriors were unable to score the tying basket as the Dolphins took the three-point win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Both teams shot the ball poorly in the game as neither side exceeded 34% shooting from either the field or from three-point range. For CSI, their ability to chip into the Nyack lead from the free-throw line with the clock stopped proved to be the deciding factor in their win. The Dolphins shot 22-33 from the line, including 10-13 in the third and 10-18 in the fourth. The Warriors committed 21 second-half fouls in the defeat and only had one player score in double figures.
DOLPHIN OF THE GAME
It was a return to form shooting the ball for Kristina Arvelo tonight as she led the team in scoring with eighteen points on 5-10 from the floor. Arvelo also connected on three of her eight three-point attempts and five of her seven free throws.
