Players to Watch (CSI): As we approach the final weekend of play for CSI, freshman
Thomas Marten is well on pace for the team's batting title, as he is hitting .393 this season with a team-best 24 hits, nine doubles, and 17 runs scored. Marten is also third on the team with nine walks and fourth on the squad with 12 RBI.
Peter Lombardo, in only 13 games is batting .333 with 10 RBI, while
Angel Santiago is right behind him at .323 and 15 runs scored.
Thomas Joyce leads the Dolphins overall with 15 RBI, while
Shendi Ulaj is the walks leader at 11. On the hill, the Dolphins are being led by Salvatore Tancucci IV, who is 3-1 with a 4.66 ERA through 19.1 innings, fanning 24. He will be honored today as part of Senior Day at CSI.
Nick Vilardi has seen six appearances in relief and is second on the team with a 5.40 ERA, followed by
Steven Collica who is 1-1 with a 5.75 ERA in 20.1 innings.
Players to Watch (QC): The Knights are being led at the plate by the strong-hitting Reed Hoskins, who leads the team with a .338 average and six doubles, adding 12 RBI and 17 runs scored. Colin Diez is right behind him at .319 with a team-best 20 RBI, adding a pair of triples, and a healthy 20 bases on balls, lifting his on-base percentage to an astounding .473. The RBI leader on the team is Brad Sakellarides who has 16 to go with him .273 average. Peter Pulsipher has been outstanding on the mound for Queens and he is 2-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 32.1 innings, fanning 37 and holding opponents to just a .188 average. Rob Backus has been just as good with a 1-1 record and 3.60 ERA , string out 23 batters in 15 innings. Dean Fazah has made three starts and is 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA.
News & Notes: These two schools are reopening an old rivalry that has laid dormant for over 30 years. Beginning in 1979, these two teams met every year leading up to 1990, tallying 16 meetings altogether with QC having taken 11 of the previous 16, including three of the last 4. Today is the first time they are ever playing on this field, with Queens owning a 6-2 all-time record over CSI back when the Dolphins played at the Sunnyside campus. CSI's last win in the series was a 6-5 winner on April 20, 1989 in Staten Island. The teams will play two games today, one nine-inning contest and one seven-inning contest. The nine-inning affair will count towards the ECC standings while the second one will count only as a non-conference game for both teams. The three-game series within the ECC is a huge one for Queens. The top four ECC teams make the four-team playoff, and right now, Queens is on the outside looking in. They have a 9-9 ECC record, one game back from Bridgeport University. Bridgeport is playing Lincoln University this weekend, and if the Lions can take a win over Bridgeport and Queens can sweep the Dolphins, they would grab the no. 4 seen in the upcoming playoffs over the Purple Knights. CSI, therefore will be looking to play the role of spoiler this entire weekend. They also come in winners of three-straight over D'Youville College. A three-game sweep by them would finalize them in fifth place in the ECC standings, tied with Queens but owning the head-to-head tiebreaker.
