STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball program enters a new era following an 18-year tenure under Michael Mauro. In August 2026, Staten Island native Eddie Medina became the seventh head coach in CSI Baseball history, spanning both the Division II and Division III eras.

"I'd like to thank Matthew Scally and the College of Staten Island administration for trusting me with the opportunity to lead the CSI Baseball program," Medina stated. "I am extremely grateful for the confidence they placed in me, and I understand the responsibility that comes with representing the College, our student-athletes, our alumni, and the Staten Island community."

A Moore Catholic alum, Medina spent the last three seasons at New York University (NYU – DIII) as the pitching coach, where he assisted with recruiting, player development, scouting, practice planning, fundraising, and overall game strategy. Prior to his time with the Violets, Medina served as the Director of Baseball Operations for the Staten Island FerryHawks.

During Medina's tenure with the Violets, the program posted its eighth consecutive winning season in 2023, finishing with a 20-17-1 record while tying the program record with eight UAA victories. That season, the pitching staff recorded a program-record of 304 strikeouts, while the team's hitters twice belted four home runs in a game, tying the program record.

Former CSI Baseball head coach Michael Mauro praised Medina, stating, "I couldn't be more excited about Eddie taking over the Baseball program. He is young, excited, and has his own stamp on the Staten Island Baseball community. His background and professional experience speak for itself."

"What Mike has given to the CSI Baseball program and the Staten Island community over the years is incredibly special," Medina stated. "His impact goes far beyond wins and losses and to be the person entrusted with following Coach Mauro is a responsibility I do not take lightly. My goal is to honor the foundation he has built while bringing my own energy, vision, and identity to the next chapter of CSI Baseball."

In addition to his coaching experience, Medina is a former four-year Division I player at St. John's University, where he was a three-time BIG EAST Champion and NCAA Regional Champion. He went on to play professionally for 10 years across a variety of independent leagues, primarily in the American Association. In 2019, Medina was named an American Association All-Star as a member of the St. Paul Saints, where he threw a no-hitter and helped lead the team to an American Association Championship.

"Eddie [Medina] is a well-known face in the Staten Island Baseball community," said Athletic Director Matthew Scally. "His enthusiasm for taking on this opportunity and his desire to build something special at CSI are evident. We look forward to seeing him thrive and grow as the head coach of a program that is entering an exciting new phase and continuing to build toward success at the Division II level."

Mauro finished, "This program has the ability to be a powerhouse in Division II and with Eddie coming in along with a new [turf] field, I believe CSI baseball is in great hands."

The addition of a brand-new turf facility, officially completed in the summer of 2026, opens the door to new possibilities for CSI Baseball as the program continues to build toward its future.

"I want everyone who has been a part of CSI Baseball to know that they will always have a place here. Together, we are going to honor the past, embrace the future, and build a program that everyone associated with CSI can be proud of," Medina finished.
