SECOND-HALF COMEBACK FIZZLES IN MEN'S SOCCER 2021 HOME DEBUT

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team made their 2021 home debut this afternoon against Nyack College, but saw a second-half comeback attempt fall short as they fell to 0-2 on the season with a 4-1 defeat.  The win for the Warriors, their first of the season, improved their record to 1-3.

KEY MOMENTS
The Warriors had the majority of the scoring opportunities in the first half and were finally able to break through in the twenty-seventh minute when Javier Plaza sent a free kick off the outstretched hands of Omer Hamzacebi and into the back of the net.  They extended their lead to two twelve minutes later on a Mitchell Reed header, but the Dolphins responded with a Shane Siegel header of their own just under twelve minutes into the second half.  However, this is where the Dolphins comeback bid would end as two more Warrior goals, Reed's second of the game and Noah Brill's first, gave Nyack an insurmountable three-goal advantage, 4-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Corners favored the Warriors 8-1 in the first half, an advantage which coincided with their plentiful scoring chances and time spent on the attack.  They also led in shots 10-3 at the break, but their two-goal lead was certainly not the fault of Hamzecebi who managed to record four first-half saves while spending most of the half under immense pressure.  Despite a much stronger start to the second half for the Dolphins, it was ultimately more of the same in half number two as the Warriors repeated their 10-3 shot advantage forcing Hamzecebi to make another six saves.

COACH'S REACTION
Following the game Head Coach John Tardy reflected on his team's performance saying, "Obviously, we weren't good enough today.  We have a very good young group and we've shown glimpses of how good we can be."  He also noted the need for improvement and expressed optimism that his team will respond to the challenges ahead.  "The coaching staff and players need to continue to get better so we can be effective and win games at this level," Tardy said.  It's a process and we're in the infancy stages of it.  We will be better."

DOLPHIN(S) OF THE GAME
The Dolphins defense faced immense attacking pressure throughout the game, but was able to generate their best chances behind Brandon Figueroa's free kick attempts, one of which led to Shane Siegel's goal.  Despite the frantic pace of play for much of the match, the Dolphins got 90 minutes from Leandro Angulo and Nicholas Kishenko, both of whom were able to help support their goalkeeper as the Warriors dominated possession in the first half.

WHATS NEXT
The Dolphins will travel to Orangeburg, NY for their next match this Wednesday where they will face Dominican at 2 PM.
