Staten Island, NY - Taking on Bloomfield College for the first time in over 35 years, the College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind win to score their first victory of the season, 2-1 in double overtime. The win, CSI's first, ups their record to 1-4. The loss, which marks the Bears' fifth straight match without a win, drops Bloomfield to 1-4-1.
KEY MOMENTS
The Bears controlled the game's opening minutes and would ultimately register the game's first goal with just under twenty-eight minutes remaining in the first half. It was a Quincy Baal cross onto the foot of Matiss Zegele that scored the game's first goal and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead. However, the Dolphins responded with a pair of unanswered goals including the game-winner. The equalizing goal came as the result of a Michael Rofail corner kick that found the head of Nicholas Kishenko who netted his first goal of the season. This would be the only time either team would score until the second overtime when a Daniel Angulo cross connected with the foot of Rofail for the golden goal to give the Dolphins a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
In what was an incredibly physical game, twenty-four fouls were committed between the two teams, seventeen by Bloomfield and another seven by CSI. This led to six yellow cards being issued and a plethora of free kicks, most coming in the second half. Indicative of the halftime adjustments made by the Dolphins, CSI outshot Bloomfield 14-5 for the game including 9-0 after the conclusion of the first half. The CSI win also keeps them unbeaten against Bloomfield as they are now 5-0-1 against the Bears in six matchups dating back to 1980.
COACH'S REACTION
Praising the performance of his young team, Head Coach John Tardy emphasized the importance of his team's depth in the moments immediately following the end of today's match. "It feels good for our group, a very young group, many in their first collegiate season, to pick up our first win," Tardy said. "For us to collectively play well together with a lot of guys getting a lot of minutes is key. I think the future is very bright for our program and we're excited to build upon this win and to keep moving forward."
DOLPHIN(S) OF THE GAME
It was a big day for Michael Rofail who was on both the assisting end and scoring end of a Dolphins goal for the first time this season. In addition to also scoring his first goal of the season, Nicholas Kishenko played a key role defensively in limiting the Bears to a single goal. Leandro Angulo, along with Kishenko and Brian Kerilu, played the full 105 minutes. Angulo split time between the midfield and backer positions and was vital to the Dolphins' defensive efforts throughout the match.
