DOLPHINS DENIED SECOND-STRAIGHT WIN IN MATCHUP WITH RIVAL QUEENS COLLEGE, 1-0

Staten Island, NY - Reigniting their long-dormant rivalry with fellow CUNY institution and ECC member Queens College, the College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team was denied their second straight win as they fell to the Knights 1-0. The Knights' win in today's inaugural CUNY Derby Cup improves their record to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in the ECC. The Dolphins loss drops CSI to 1-5 on the season including 0-2 against ECC opponents.

KEY MOMENTS

Both of the game's key moments came in the second half, the first of which saw the Knights register the first goal of the match in the seventieth minute. Following a Queens cross, Thomas Esperoe was able to redirect the ball towards Daniel Camera who then headed it into the back of the net to put his team ahead, 1-0. Now trailing by a goal, the Dolphins' best scoring chance came off the foot of Daniel Angulo in the eighty-fifth minute. It was a free kick by Angulo which forced Knights goalkeeper Dario Cruz to dive towards the near post and fully extend for the game's biggest save.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

The two teams compiled very similar numbers on the stat sheet in what was a very evenly-matched contest. Both teams finished with eight shots overall, the Knights putting five on goal and the Dolphins four. Corner kicks favored CSI 5-4, but it was the Knights making the most of a second-half corner that resulted in the game's lone goal. In the second consecutive physical match CSI has played, the two sides combined to commit 27 fouls, 14 by the Knights and 13 by the Dolphins.

DOLPHIN(S) OF THE GAME

Today's Dolphin of the game, Daniel Angulo, was responsible for three of CSI's eight shots including a pair on goal. He also gave the Dolphins their best scoring chance of the second half with the team behind 1-0. His eighty-fifth-minute free kick nearly served as the equalizer, and by that point, he had already spent 84 minutes in the match on his way to ultimately playing the full 90.

WHAT'S NEXT

Next up for the Dolphins is the second of three straight ECC matchups to be played on their home turf as they will face District of Columbia on Wednesday at 3:30 in the second half of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader.
