DOLPHINS SQUANDER LEAD IN FINAL SECONDS IN LOSS TO ECC FOE MAVERICKS, 67-63

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball played a fantastic first half of basketball against the ECC undefeated Mavericks of Mercy College, however, the Mavericks would chip away at CSI's lead in the second half. It was in the final seconds of play that CSI would lose their lead and ultimately fall to Mercy, 67-63. The loss drops CSI's record to 3-9 overall (1-4 ECC), while the Mavericks improve to 7-6 overall (5-0 ECC).
 
KEY MOMENTS
The Mavericks would score the first bucket of the game; however, CSI would quickly go on a 7-0 run, capped by a Jenalyse Alarcon three-pointer. CSI would take a five-point lead twice in the first quarter, before starting the second quarter with a six-point lead, 15-9. The second quarter is when the Dolphins would do most of their damage, going up by as many as 17 points. CSI would go on a 10-0 run to start that quarter, fueled by three-pointers from Elizabeth Lofaro and Gia Esposito. CSI would use a strong inside game and free throws to head to the locker room up, 31-17. CSI would maintain their double-digit lead in the third quarter, going up by as many as 19, off a Kia Johnson layup with 2:20 left to play in the third period. It was then that the Mavericks would make their first big run of the game, as they scored 10 straight points behind Katie Wall's layup and three-point basket, cutting CSI's lead to nine points, 48-39, entering the fourth period. An and-one play started the fourth period for the Mavericks, a few minutes later, Wall would cut CSI's lead down to one, 51-50. Coming off the bench, it was Ashley Lambert's second three-pointer of the quarter that gave CSI a four-point lead, 54-50, with a little over six minute to play. A minute later, a Kristina Arvelo three-ball gave CSI a seven-point cushion, 57-50. With five minutes left to play, both teams would go back and forth until, two free throws by Maria Tedesco would give Mercy a one-point lead, 59-58, their first lead of the game since, 2-0 at the start of the game. Another Lambert three, would give CSI the lead right back, 61-59, with a little over two to play. Over a minute later, Wall would tie the game at 61-61, though, that was answered quickly by an Alarcon layup, that gave CSI a 63-61 lead with 42 seconds left on the clock. It was Wall once again that hit a big three-pointer giving the Mavericks, the 64-63 lead with 24 seconds remaining in the game. CSI was not able to find the basket in the final seconds as Mercy closed out the come from behind victory, 67-63.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Both teams shot in the mid 30s percent wise for the game, though, the Mavericks would hit 7-14 threes in the second half aiding them to the victory. Both teams would turn the ball over 15 times, however, the Mavericks would score 15 points of those turnovers compared to just 10 points off turnovers for CSI. The Mavericks grabbed 48 total rebounds (18 offensive) while CSI would grab 45 (19 offensive). Maverick Katie Wall registered 23 points to lead the team, scoring most of her points in second half, while CSI's Alarcon would led them in points with 17 and rebounds with 12 (11 came in the first half).
 
DOLPHINS OF THE GAME
Today's Dolphins of the game goes to Jenalyse Alarcon and Ashley Lambert. Alarcon, led the team with 17 points and 12 rebounds, in route to yet another double-double, while Lambert would come off the bench to score 12 big points for CSI, most of them coming in the second half, though it was not enough to seal the victory tonight.
