Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball started their road ECC matchup down by double-digits early and were forced to play catch up the rest of the game in route to a, 65-55, loss to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC). The loss drops CSI's record to 3-10 overall (1-5 ECC), while the Spartans improve to 5-9 overall (4-1 ECC). The Spartans have now won four in a row while the Dolphins have dropped their last two games.
KEY MOMENTS
The Spartans would start the game on a 12-0 run due to a few Dolphin turnovers and hot shooting by STAC. CSI's Ashely Lambert would come into the game for CSI mid-way through the first quarter and provide a spark for the Dolphins scoring seven points, cutting the Spartan's lead to six, 17-11 to start the second quarter.
Elizabeth Lofaro would cut the lead down to three, 17-14, early in the second. A few minutes later,
Kristina Arvelo would hit her second three of the game, giving CSI their first lead of the game, 21-20, with just under six to play in the half. The Spartans would respond quickly with a 9-0 run due to back-to-back Dolphin turnovers. It was capped by an Angelique Holguin lay-up that put the Dolphins in a eight point hole, 29-21, with just over three to play in the half. The Dolphins would go into the locker room down seven, 31-24. The Dolphins would score the first six points in the second half to cut the Spartan lead down one, 31-30. It would take the Spartans over four minutes to score their first points of the second half off a three ball from and a fastbreak lay-up by Sarah Ericson, putting them up 36-31 with under five to play in the third period. Spartan Alexa Huertas would go on her own 9-0 run hitting three straight threes', in the final two minutes of the third, giving STAC a 10-point lead, 45-35, entering the fourth quarter. STAC would extend to a 13-point lead, their biggest in the game, with six minutes reaming in the final frame. A
Gia Esposito three with under 65 seconds remain, would cut the Spartan lead down to six, 61-55, however, that would be the closest the Dolphin would get. The Spartans would use free throws and defense to seal the victory for a final of, 65-55.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dolphins shot just under 40% from the floor and 78% from the free throw line. CSI capitalized off turnovers scoring nineteen. STAC shot 48% from the floor and only 40% from the foul line.
Jenalyse Alarcon dropped 12 points and had nine rebounds.
Elizabeth Lofaro also dropped 12 points and nabbed six assists.
