Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team completed yet another late-game comeback this afternoon as they outlasted the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport in double-overtime, 92-88. The Dolphins snap a six-game losing streak and improve to 3-8 overall, 1-3 in conference play. The loss for the Purple Knights is their seventh straight and drops them to 3-10 on the season, 0-6 against the ECC.
KEY MOMENTS
The Dolphins opened the game cold from the field and trailed by eight early in the first quarter. CSI would get as close as two, but Bridgeport would go on a 13-3 run to end the quarter up twelve. The Dolphins battled all the way back once again and evened the score at thirty in the final minutes of the half, but Bridgeport maintained a four-point advantage heading into the intermission. After the break, the third quarter was dominated by the Purple Knights, and they took a fifteen-point lead into the final quarter. In the fourth, CSI cut the lead to single digits on a Kristina Arvelo three-pointer with just under six minutes to play and then pulled to within four on a Jenalyse Alarcon and one with four minutes on the clock. A Gia Esposito layup brought CSI to within two with nineteen seconds left, and after a 1-2 trip to the free-throw line by Janiece Loney, Esposito hit the game-tying three to send the game to overtime. CSI would then go on to force double-overtime after a back-and-forth five minutes culminated with a Noemia Massingue layup in the closing seconds of the overtime period. In the second overtime, Arvelo scored eight straight points in the first two minutes to give CSI a five-point lead that they would never relinquish. The Purple Knights would get as close as two, but the Dolphins closed the door on a four-point victory, 92-88.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dolphins had one of their better shooting performances of the season as they hit 44% of their shot attempts. However, this was not good enough to surpass the shooting numbers for the Purple Knights who shot 49% from the floor and over 40% from three-point range. Bridgeport led for all but five minutes in the game, and the Dolphins never led during regulation. Jenalyse Alarcon shattered her career scoring high with 32 points and approached a career-high with 17 rebounds. Esposito also came within three points of tying a career-high scoring 22 points.
DOLPHINS OF THE GAME
Today's Dolphin of the Game had what was undoubtedly the best individual performance of the season by any Dolphin. Jenalyse Alarcon's career scoring high helped propel the Dolphins offense to another come-from-behind win and her seventeen rebounds contributed to a five-rebound advantage for her team.
