GAMEDAY: MEN'S SOCCER OPENS STRETCH RUN OF CONFERENCE GAMES AGAINST MERCY COLLEGE

10/15/2022 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team opens a four-game stretch of conference games to wrap up their season this afternoon against Mercy College.  The Dolphins come in 4-9 on the season and 2-2 against the East Coast Conference.  The Mavericks come in 9-2-2 on the season and 4-1-1 against conference opponents.  These two teams have a history spanning five games that dates all the way back to 1978.  Mercy has won all of those meetings with the most recent being a 2-0 victory over the Dolphins last season.

The Dolphins last played on Wednesday afternoon on the road against Alliance University.  Despite the final stat line favoring the Warriors in several key categories, the Dolphins were able to come away with the victory behind an impressive game-winning goal from Javier Campos in the eighty-first minute.  The Mavericks last took the pitch one week ago and played to a 1-1 draw against St. Thomas Aquinas College.

The Dolphins scored multiple goals for the fifth time this season on Wednesday, and while Campos put the Dolphins ahead for good in the game, it was Brendan Maguire who gave the Dolphins an early 1-0 advantage with his second goal of the season.  In goal, Amari Thompson once again held the opposition to two goals or fewer in a game, and he has yet to allow more than two goals in any home game this season.  Thompson has also posted a clean sheet twice on his home turf this year, and the Dolphins remain above the .500 mark, 3-2, at Dolphins Soccer Park.  Luis Silva leads the Mavericks with six goals and Mattias Schilbred-Ericksen leads the team with six assists.  Vasco Baptista, the Mercy goal-scorer against the Spartans last weekend, is second on the team in points behind Silva with eleven.  Erik Elvestad has spent the majority of the season in goal for the Mavericks allowing less than one goal per game and saving 75% of shots faced.

MORGAN'S MESSAGE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY
Today's game is not only a big conference match for the College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team, but it will also be a match dedicated to raising awareness of the mental health struggles faced by athletes.  Led by Jenna Como and Nadia Evola of CSI Women's Soccer, The Men's Soccer Team will join the women in partnering with Morgan's Message to increase awareness of the mental health epidemic that impacts countless competitors, especially collegiate athletes.  Ahead of today's game, the Dolphins will be warming up in t-shirts featuring a butterfly design symbolizing hope and empowerment for the future.  Be sure to arrive early ahead of the women's for a brief pregame ceremony that will detail further the mission of Morgan's Message including a brief message prepared by Como.
