Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

MEN'S SOCCER BATTLES MERCY TO SCORELESS TIE IN CRITICAL LATE-SEASON MATCHUP

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer remained very much alive in the race for an East Coast Conference playoff spot as they battled Mercy College to a scoreless draw.  Following the tie, the Dolphins are now 4-9-1 on the season, 2-2-1 against the ECC.  The Mavericks are now 9-2-3 overall and 4-1-2 against the conference.  Both teams scattered chances throughout the match, but the key defensive plays by both sides came in the second half.  For the Dolphins, Amari Thompson made two huge saves to keep the game scoreless late in the second half, and for Mercy, Saul Melendez stopped a Nicholas Kishenko header from finding its way in during the closing minutes.

Mercy got the better of play early in the match and held a 6-3 advantage in shots entering the halftime break.  They also held a 3-0 advantage in corners through the first forty-five minutes, but none of their shot attempts came particularly close to finding the back of the net.  In the first half, the Dolphins also had two shots on goal, but it was the CSI backers who really stood out during the first half of play.  The effort of Steven Flores, Leandro Angulo, Kishenko, and Luis Ascencio Cueva was a big reason why the game remained scoreless at the break.

Following the intermission, the second half featured a much faster pace and the spotlight was placed onto Thompson in net for CSI.  Thompson made five second half saves including two incredible stops down the stretch in the late stages of the match.  For CSI, Dennis Coticelli nearly broke the scoreless tie when he sent a shot off the post, and with the game entering the closing minutes, Kishenko sent a header toward goal that was kept out by Melendez at the last moment.  After numerous close calls for both teams late and a very hard-fought ninety minutes, the match ended 0-0.

The tie keeps the Dolphins very much alive in search of a playoff position with three conference matches remaining on their schedule.  The Dolphins face the University of the District of Columbia, Daemen University, and Queens College down the stretch as they look to become the first Dolphins team to qualify for the postseason at the Division II level.  The Mavericks can clinch a playoff spot with one more victory or a Dolphins loss in any of CSI's last three games.

The Dolphins have a week off ahead of their next match when they will take on the University of the District of Columbia next Saturday at noon in Washington, DC.
