SWIMMING & DIVING SEASON-OPENER DECIDED IN FINAL RELAY AS DOLPHINS NARROWLY FALL TO ADELPHI

10/21/2022 10:00:00 PM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Swimming & Diving Team opened their season last night against Adelphi University, and in a meet that came down to the final relay on the men's side, CSI fell 125-96 and 117-110.  The first meet of the season for both team's improved Adelphi's men and women to 1-0 and dropped CSI's men and women to 0-1.

Women's Meet
The CSI women opened the meet with a victory in the 200-Yard Medley Relay, but Adelphi would take the top two spots in each of the next two events.  However, the Dolphins would pull closer behind wins from Brooke Manning in the 50-Yard Freestyle and Jessica Johnson in the 200-Yard Individual Medley.  Jordan Swanson then drew the Dolphins even closer as she narrowly took the 1-Meter Diving event by five points with a score of 218.25.  Following 1-Meter Diving, Manning took another 1st-place finish in the 100-Yard Butterfly, but this was the last non-diving event CSI would win until the 100-Yard Breaststroke.  After Swanson took the top score in 3-Meter Diving, Johnson won the 100-Yard Breaststroke event to earn CSI's final victory of the night.  By this point, the team's deficit was too large to overcome and the Dolphins fell, 125-96.

Men's Meet
The men's meet began far differently than the women's meet as the Dolphins were forced to climb out of an early hole following defeats in each of the first two events.  CSI's first top finish came in event three as David Poggioli took the top spot in the 200-Yard Freestyle.  Anthony Attenborough then made it back-to-back CSI victories winning the 50-Yard Freestyle, but Adelphi would win the final event before diving, the 200-Yard Individual Medley.  Michael Graham would win the 1-Meter Diving Event decisively to tighten the score further and Charles Cusumano would add another Dolphins win in the 100-Yard Butterfly.  Poggioli then took the top spot in the 100-Yard Freestyle and Attenborough won the 500-Yard Freestyle just minutes later.  Graham gave the Dolphins the lead with his victory in 3-Meter Diving, and heading into the final event, the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay, the Dolphins led by two.  In the decisive relay, the Dolphins were edged out by two seconds and Adelphi made it a clean sweep as they won the men's meet 117-110.

The Dolphins return to the pool in one week when they host Western Connecticut State and Queens College on Friday, October 28th at 5 PM.  The women will compete against both teams in the meet while the men will only compete against Western Connecticut.
