Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

MEN'S SOCCER SEES LATE COMEBACK BID FALL SHORT AGAINST DAEMEN IN 2-1 DEFEAT

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team wrapped up the home portion of their schedule this afternoon as their comeback bid fell short against Daemen University in a 2-1 defeat.  The Dolphins fall to 4-10-2 on the season and 2-3-2 against the East Coast Conference.  The loss eliminates the Dolphins from playoff contention.  As for the Wildcats, their push for the playoff remains alive with the victory as they improve to 7-6-3 on the season, 3-3-1 against the conference.

Neither team got on the board early as the match remained scoreless for nearly sixty minutes before the game's first goal.  However, the Dolphins held a distinct advantage in time of possession and shot attempts through the first half.  The Dolphins had eleven first half shot attempts including a Daniel Angulo strike off the post and a Leandro Angulo shot off the crossbar.   CSI appeared poised to take the lead in the first half but were unable to break through with a goal, and the two teams head into the intermission locked in a scoreless tie.

In the second half, it was a Wildcats free kick that led to the first score of the match.  Nassim Zahouani sent a well-placed ball straight onto the head of the team's leading goal-scorer Derek Bartlo who sent it into the back of net to make it 1-0.  Less than ten minutes later, Trey Buscaglia made it a two-goal game with his first of the season, and the Dolphins now needed three goals to keep their season alive.  Just moments later, Nicholas Kishenko scored his fourth goal of the season off assists from Jahmali Peterson and Roberto Gioffre to make it 2-1, but the CSI comeback bid would stall here.  The Dolphins would have several quality chances the rest of the way, and once again, they thoroughly outpossessed the Wildcats in the second half.  However, this wasn't enough to pick up the win they needed to remain alive in the playoff chase, and the Dolphins fell by a 2-1 final score.

The Dolphins outshot Daemen 22-4 in the match with eleven shot attempts in each half of play.  Of Daemen's four shots, just two were on goal, and both found the back of the net.  Kishenko's fourth goal gave him the team lead for CSI, and Bartlo's eighth extended his lead in that department for the Wildcats.  For Daemen, their season will hang in the balance when they take the pitch against the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday.  The Wildcats will need to win and will need Roberts Wesleyan to lose against Mercy to qualify for the playoffs.  If the Redhawks tie on Saturday and Daemen wins, the fourth seed in the conference playoffs will be determined by a series of tiebreakers.

In their last match of the 2022 season the Dolphins will face Queens College on Saturday night at 8 PM.
