Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team fell to Queens College tonight. Despite a second half push, they lost to the Knights, 72-59. This is now back-to-back losses for the Dolphins after previously winning three of four. The Dolphins now sit at 6-16 on the year and fall to 4-10 in conference play. The opposing Knights improve to 4-17 and 3-11 in ECC play.
KEY MOMENTS
The Knights jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead as the Dolphins struggled to score early on. Behind a
Gia Esposito triple, CSI was able to close the gap to just one, 9-8. Queens College would lead after a very quiet first quarter for both teams, 11-8. The Knights scratched first to start the second and opened up a seven-point cushion with just under eight minutes to go, 17-10. CSI found themselves on the wrong side of a 14-2 run as Queens College turned defense in to offense. The Dolphins were forced to call a timeout. The Knights would soon open up a 20-point advantage as they led, 30-10, midway through the second. Queens College was amidst a 22-0 run before the Dolphins finally scratched, thanks to an
Elizabeth Lofaro three ball. CSI trailed by 20-points at halftime, 36-16. Out of the half, the Knights kept it coming. They opened up with a 7-3 run. The Dolphins were able to respond however, as they went on a 14-3 run of their own to close the gap to 13 with under three minutes to go, 46-33. CSI would outscore Queens College 23-14 in the third and only trail by 11 to start the fourth, 50-39. Both teams would trade blows to start the final quarter. The Dolphins would cut the lead to eight with 4:24 left, 58-50. Esposito would go on a 6-0 run of her own to bring CSI within seven, after the Knights extended their lead to 13. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, it was too little too late. They fell to the Knights, 73-64.
INSIDE THE BOX SCOREÂ
The Dolphins struggled from the floor. They shot just 37% from the field, 33% from three, and 70% from the free throw line. The biggest disparity came in the rebounding department. The Dolphins were outrebounded by 11 (42-31). CSI's bench was huge though, as they outscored Queens College 30-13. The Knights led by as much as 26 points in a game where CSI would never lead. They had it going all game. They shot 48% from the field, 43% from three, and 58% from the line.
DOLPHIN OF THE GAME
Gia Esposito had the hot hand for the Dolphins. She scored a team-high 20 points behind her 55% shooting from deep (6-11).
Noemia Massingue had one of her best outings of the season. She tallied 14 points and added five boards off the bench. For CSI,
Jenalyse Alarcon continued her dominance in the paint on her way to recording another double-double (10-12).
