Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

DOLPHINS OUTLAST BEARS TO WIN 2022 HOME-OPENER, 1-0

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team picked up their first win of the season in today's 2022 home-opener as they defeated the Bloomfield College Bears by a final score of 1-0.  Leandro Angulo kick started a CSI attacking play with a long pass up the sideline to Luis Ascencio Cueva who found Steven Adebisi with the cross for the game's lone goal in the twenty-seventh minute.  The Dolphins then withstood a late offensive surge from the Bears in the second half to hold on for the one-goal victory.  The win, the first of the season for the Dolphins and for Head Coach Alex Cuba, evens up CSI's record at 1-1.  The loss drops the Bears to 0-1-1.

The Bears had the first quality chance of the game early when they sent a free kick sailing just inches over the crossbar.  However, the Dolphins would gain command of possession for the remainder of the half with the highlight being the twenty-seventh minute Adebisi goal assisted by Angulo and Ascencio Cueva.  Through the first forty-five minutes the Dolphins held a 5-2 advantage in shots which was reflected in their distinct advantage in time of possession ahead of the intermission.

Following the halftime break, the Dolphins registered the first two shots, but this was most of the offense they would muster in the second half.  The Bears had a 6-4 shot advantage after the intermission including a pair of headers from point blank range, one that traveled wide and another saved by Dolphins goalkeeper Amari Thompson.  CSI's best chance came on another scoring bid by Adebisi in the eighty-first minute which missed just wide.  It was just a few minutes later in the closing seconds of the match that a crucial call nullified what was the best opportunity of the game for the Bears.  Following a free kick from the edge of the attacking third, Bloomfield put a shot past Thompson but were immediately ruled offsides.  This closed the door on their search for a game-tying goal and the Dolphins held on for the win.

Leandro Angulo and Nicholas Kishenko brought a great deal of physicality at the defensive and offensive ends of the pitch respectively.  The game saw the teams combine to commit 33 fouls and receive four yellow cards.  Adebisi's goal was his second of the season and the assists for Ascencio Cueva and Angulo were their first.

The Dolphins will next be in action on Sunday back on their home turf when they take on Assumption University at 1:00 PM.  Fans in attendance will receive a Welcome to Victory Blvd T-Shirt while supplies last.
