Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team wrapped up a full weekend of Dolphins soccer with a loss to Assumption University this afternoon. CSI, now 1-2, had numerous quality chances throughout the match but failed to find the back of the net in a 2-0 defeat. The Greyhounds improved to 2-1 as they capitalized on a pair of free kicks that directly led to each of their goals.
The Greyhounds struck first in the opening minutes of the match when a free kick from near midfield by Ruben Faria perfectly set up Matthew Dion for a shot inside of the far post. Leading by a goal, the Greyhounds withstood a surge of CSI offense which saw the Dolphins rattle off four consecutive shots from the twelfth minute through the eighteenth minute. Two of those shots belonged to Kory Alvarez, but the best chance came on a Shane Siegel chip attempt toward an empty net that traveled just wide. However, Assumption would score the second and final goal of the match in the twenty-sixth minute when yet another free kick led to a Greyhounds score. This time, Faria sent the free kick into heavy traffic in front of the CSI goal where it was deflected and bounced inside of the far post.
Ahead of the intermission and into the second half, CSI began to dominate possession and once again attempted four consecutive shots across twelve minutes. The best of these four opportunities belonged to Steven Adebisi who attempted to turn toward goal in the midst of three markers and was unable to get enough on the shot to score. This was the last major scoring chance for CSI, and the Greyhounds silenced the Dolphins' attack the rest of the way for the two-goal victory.
Despite a win by multiple goals for the Greyhounds, the final box score showed how evenly matched these teams were for the majority of the game. The teams were even in shots with 12 each, but the Greyhounds put five on goal compared to only two for the Dolphins. Corner kicks favored the Dolphins 5-1, but it was the ability of the Greyhounds to make the most of their free kicks that was the deciding factor in the match. Perhaps most notably, the game was incredibly physical as the two teams combined to commit 32 fouls and were issued a total of five yellow cards.
The Dolphins will have a chance to get back to the .500 mark on Wednesday night when they travel to New Haven, CT to take on Southern Connecticut State University at 7 PM.
