Rockville Centre, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team opened the conference portion of their schedule yesterday and were once again held without a goal in a 2-0 loss to Molloy University. The 1-4 Dolphins have now lost three consecutive matches and with the win, the Lions ended a three-match winless streak. With the defeat the Dolphins are now 0-1 in conference play and the Lions, who were also playing their conference opener, improve to 1-0.
The first half of the match didn't feature much offense as both teams attempted only three shots through the first forty-five minutes. None of the six attempted shots were on goal as neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save ahead of the intermission. However, the attacking play would pick up in the second half as the two sides combined to take twelve shots including four on goal. Unfortunately for the Dolphins all four shots on target belonged to the Lions and two of those found the back of the net. The first came in the sixty-forth minute when Jonas Jacobsen opened the scoring on a penalty kick following what proved to be a costly CSI foul. Already ahead by a goal, the Lions would go on to add some insurance on their way to a 2-0 victory when Matt Laya-Vetell assisted Gio Fabiano's team-leading third goal of the season.
The Dolphins didn't register much in the way of stats, but after debuting backer
Roberto Gioffre in their last match, yesterday's game marked the return of
Mohammedou Sow, a former CUNYAC First-Team All-Star who last played for the Dolphins during the 2019 season. The Dolphins ultimately finished the game with 9 shots and four different players attempted at least two of those,
Dennis Coticelli,
Daniel Angulo,
Nicholas Kishenko, and
Kory Alvarez. For the Dolphins, yesterday's game was the third straight without a goal, and for the Lions yesterday's game marked the third time Molloy has scored multiple goals in a game this season.
The Dolphins will next be in action at Dolphins Soccer Park on Wednesday when they return to non-conference play against Holy Family University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 PM.
