Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

DOLPHINS EARN FIRST CONFERENCE WIN IN SHUTOUT OF SPARTANS, 2-0

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team snapped their six game losing skid and earned their first victory in conference play this afternoon as they defeated the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College by a final score of 2-0.  CSI struck first on Brendan Maguire's first goal of the season following a misplayed bounce by Spartans goalkeeper Tobar McDaniels in the first half.  They would then go on to add all the insurance they needed on a Nicholas Kishenko header, his second goal of the season, in the second half. With the win, he Dolphins improve to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.  The Spartans fall to 3-2-3, 0-1-2 against the East Coast Conference.

The game opened with a frantic pace to as both teams exchanged scoring chances through the first twenty-five minutes.  However, neither side would find the back of the net until a misplay by McDaniels in goal for the Spartans led to CSI's first goal.  Following a long ball that took an abrupt bounce in the penalty area, Maguire got behind the Spartans' keeper and directed the ball into the net for his first score of the season.  This shot was one of only three shot attempts by the two teams following the twenty-five minute mark in the half and the Dolphins took a one-goal lead into the halftime break.

Following the intermission, both sides were held without a shot for over ten minutes before the Dolphins finally sent the first shot of the half wide of the frame.  Less than two minutes later, a great ball set up Shane Siegel in a scoring position, but McDaniels was able to make a difficult save to keep his team's deficit at one.  Despite making the big save, he was unable to keep the ball from rolling over the touch line, and the ensuing corner kick would directly lead to the second Dolphins goal.  A Daniel Angulo corner traveled straight into the center of the box where Kishenko, who narrowly missed scoring on a header earlier in the match, soared over several Spartans and headed the ball past McDaniels and in.  This gave the Dolphins a two-goal advantage that was never in any serious jeopardy thanks in large part to another clean sheet for Amari Thompson.

For Thompson, the clean sheet was his second of the season at home, and for the Dolphins, the victory is their first since their home-opener.  Maguire's goal was his first and Kishenko's goal was his second in as many games.  CSI held the advantage in both shot and shots on goal while also doubling the corner kick total of the Spartans.  In what was one of the most well-rounded performances of the season for the team statistically, the Dolphins also scored multiple goals for just the third time this season.  This is the first time they have accomplished that feat in a victory.

Next up for the Dolphins is a meeting with the D'Youville University Saints next Saturday.  Kickoff of the men's game will come at approximately 2 PM following the women's game which will get underway at 11 AM.
