New Haven, CT - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team suffered their second consecutive loss this evening falling to the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University by a final score of 6-0. The Dolphins contained the Owls attack through the first twenty minutes of the match, but once SCSU registered the game's first goal they never looked back. The Owls, now 3-0-1, led the Dolphins, now 1-3, by three goals at the halftime break. They would go on to find the back of the net three more times in an impressive offensive display to earn a 6-0 victory.
The Dolphins found themselves on the defensive in the opening minutes, but CSI did a good job withstanding the immense attacking pressure they faced from the Owls. Much of this attacking play originated as the result of defensive pressure from SCSU in the midfield, and this is what would ultimately lead to the game's first goal. Shortly after
Leandro Angulo had kept the game scoreless by preventing a shot from entering the net for the second straight game, the Dolphins committed a costly midfield turnover that led to the opening score. Leroy Best capitalized off the giveaway finding Yannick Hilpert to make it 1-0.
Less than two minutes after the first goal,
Amari Thompson made a difficult save to keep the deficit at one, but this deficit was short-lived as Murphy Malone added his first career goal to make it 2-0. Already ahead by two, the Owls added one more before the intermission when Arnold Signell scored for the first time this season. Following halftime, SCSU continued to apply the pressure with a header that traveled just over the crossbar, and just three and a half minutes later, Hideki Morales would score the first of his two goals on the night to make it 4-0. Joshi Munoz would later add his second goal of the season before Morales capped of the scoring with his second of the match in the eighty-first minute.
Only two Dolphins,
Kory Alvarez and
Roberto Gioffre, put a shot on goal in the game, and CSI was outshot 20-9 overall. Shots on goal favored the Owls 12-4, and five different players found the back of the net for SCSU. The only Dolphin to play the entire match this evening was the goalkeeper Thompson. He made six saves and spent much of the match dealing with the constant attacking pressure from the Owls. The Dolphins have now been shut out in their last two matches with their last goal coming in the first half of their home-opener one week ago.
The Dolphins will return to action alongside the Women's Soccer Team when they travel to Molloy College this Saturday for a 12 PM matchup with the Lions.
