GAMEDAY: MEN'S BASKETBALL FACES MERCY LOOKING TO SNAP TWO-GAME SKID

1/25/2023 9:00:00 AM

Dobbs Ferry, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team continues East Coast Conference play tonight as they face the Mercy College Mavericks on the road at 7 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's game 5-13 on the season and are 3-5 in conference play.  The Mavericks enter today's game 2-14 overall record and 1-7 against the ECC.  The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead in the all-time series between these two teams earlier this season with a 69-67 victory over the Dolphins in CSI's conference opener.

CSI's last game was on Saturday on the road against Roberts Wesleyan University.  Looking for a key win against the ECC, the Dolphins could not erase a double-digit second-half deficit in a loss to the Redhawks.  The Mavericks were also last in action on Saturday against Queens when they suffered a 82-56 loss.

Messiah Mallory, Jordan McAllister and Bryce Waterman have all provided the Dolphins consistent scoring out of the starting five with each averaging over 14 points per game.  Mallory is also the team's leading rebounder, McAllister is shooting over 57% from the field, and Waterman is shooting 41% from beyond the arc.  Now coming off the CSI bench, Luis Armas is still averaging 13 points per game while shooting 42% from the field and 39% from downtown.  The point guard duo of senior Chris Velasquez and freshman JJ Chestnut are scoring just shy of 10 points each as well with both contributing nearly 5 rebounds per game on the glass.  Chestnut is also the team leader in assists with over 100 on the season.  Sean Smith Jr. leads the Mavericks in scoring at 14.4 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at just below 6 per game.  James Taylor Jr. is second in scoring at 11.7 points per game and Jayden Dewaal is averaging just shy of a double-double with 10.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.  The biggest issue for the Mavericks this year has been the lights-out shooting of their opponents.  Mercy has allowed 47% shooting from the field this year to go along with over 35% shooting from three-point range.  As for the Dolphins, they come in shooting very well as a unit and will be looking to avenge a two-point loss against the Mavericks earlier this season.

All-Time Series - Mercy leads, 2-1
