SWIMMING & DIVING CONCLUDES REGULAR SEASON IN SENIOR NIGHT TRI-MEET

1/25/2023 11:00:00 PM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Swimming & Diving Team wrapped up the regular season at home earlier tonight with a tri-meet against Kean University and the US Merchant Marine Academy.  The CSI men fell to the Mariners on the men's side 135-80 and finish the season 4-4.  The women lost to Kean 165-47 and lost to USMMA 189-43 to bring their season to a close at 5-6.  Also on the women's side, Kean edged out USMMA in a meet that came down to the final relay by a score of 119-118.

Ahead of tonight's meet, the Dolphins recognized their three seniors, Jason Torchio, Tom Smith and Melissa Poggioli.  Prior to the start of the first event, a speech recounting their careers was read to those in attendance and the three of them each received a frame commemorating their time as Dolphins.  The presentation took place in front of one of the biggest crowds of the season as The Tank was packed with both spectators and athletes from each of the three programs.

The Dolphins faced some of the toughest competition they've faced all season as both the USMMA men and Kean women entered tonight's meet unbeaten.  The Mariners were able to maintain that unbeaten record with a convincing win over CSI, and both the Kean women and USMMA women were able to pick up big wins over the Dolphins.  Though Anthony Attenborough earned the only first-place finish for the Dolphins in the 100 Yard Butterfly, the Dolphins narrowly missed several more first-place finishes.  In diving, Jordan Swanson was only narrowly beaten in the 1 Meter event.  Jessica Johnson missed first place by a fraction of a second in the 100 Yard Freestyle, and William Kwan barely missed first in both that event and in the 100 Yard Breaststroke.  Lastly, the Dolphins came up just short in both Men's 200 Yard Medley Relay and 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.

The Dolphins will have an extensive break ahead of their final meet of the season as they will be out of action until February 16th when they begin the four-day Metropolitan Swimming & Diving Conference Championship.  Joseph Foreman and Nicholas Durst of CSI Sportsnet will be on hand to cover the event for the PDF Sports Network, and all four days of the event will be live streamed via the network's Youtube channel.  More information regarding the broadcast of that event will be provided when it becomes available.
