DOLPHINS HELD TO FOUR SHOTS IN LOSS TO NEW HAVEN, 1-0

10/11/2023 9:00:00 PM

Box Score West Haven, CT - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team came up short in their non-conference matchup with the University of New Haven earlier tonight as they were defeated by the Chargers, 1-0.  The loss drops the Dolphins to 2-5-3 on the season while the Chargers improve to 5-4-2 with the victory.  The win for New Haven gives them a 1-0 lead in the all-time series.

The Dolphins managed just one shot in a first half that saw both teams get off to a slow start on the attack.  It wasn't until nearly 15 minutes into the match that New Haven finally registered the first shot attempt of the game, and the Dolphins only attempted a single shot in the first 45 minutes.  Leading up to the half, the Chargers attempted three consecutive shots, the first of which connected with the crossbar and the second of which was saved by CSI goalkeeper Nicholas Shields.

Following the break, CSI came out strong as they opened the second half with their second shot on goal.  The Dolphins went on to attempt three of the first five shots in the second half, but their shot at the 62:26 mark would be their last of the match.  Meanwhile, the first two shots of the half taken by New Haven both came in the 57th minute, and the second found the back of the net off the foot of Sean Lane-Turnbull.  Leading 1-0, the Chargers maintained control over the remainder of the match adding six more shots in the final 33 minutes.  Three of those were on goal, all stopped by Shields, but the Dolphins were held without a goal in the shutout loss.

The scoreless effort is only the second time CSI has been held without a goal this season, the first coming in a draw against Mercy University.  Shields also got his second start of the season and finished with six saves in the loss.  Several Dolphins got their first start of the season in the game as well as the team has just a two-day layoff ahead of Saturday's conference match against St. Thomas Aquinas College.

The Dolphins will face the Spartans this weekend on the road as travel to STAC on Saturday for 2:00 PM kickoff.
