GAMEDAY: MEN'S BASKETBALL SEEKS BOUNCE-BACK EFFORT AGAINST DAEMEN UNIVERSITY

2/3/2023 12:00:00 PM

Amherst, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team opens a two-game weekend road trip tonight as they take on the Daemen University Wildcats.  The Dolphins enter today's action 6-14 on the year and are 4-6 against the East Coast Conference.  The Wildcats enter tonight's game 13-7 on the season and are 6-4 in conference play.  The Wildcats have won all three meetings between the two sides going back to the 2021-2022 season and narrowly escaped The Tank with a four-point win earlier this year.

The Dolphins last played on Saturday against St. Thomas Aquinas College at The Tank on the heels of the Matty White Alumni Game.  The Dolphins got off to a poor start in their loss to the Spartans in a game that turned into a highly uncharacteristic poor shooting performance for the team.  The Wildcats last played on Sunday when they scored a ten-point victory over Queens College and will be looking for their ninth win in ten games when they face the Dolphins tonight.

Messiah Mallory remains the team-leader in scoring and rebounding for the Dolphins, and he was able to keep the Dolphins within striking-distance for much of the first half on Saturday against the Spartans.  Mallory finished with 17 points in just 29 minutes trailing only Chris Velasquez, who finished with 18, in scoring.  The Dolphins once again found themselves a bit short-handed on Saturday with only nine players available.  Of those nine players, only three registered more than a single made field goal, but CSI still has four players averaging double-figures entering tonight's game.  In addition to Mallory, Jordan McAllister, Bryce Waterman, and Luis Armas are all scoring at least 12 points per game.

Like the Dolphins, the Wildcats also have four players scoring in double-digits.  Dylan Fasoyiro's leads the way with 12.6 points per game and it was a huge game for him last time he faced the Dolphins as he scored 31.  Right behind Fasoyiro in scoring are Joey Atkins who is averaging 12.5 per game and Nick MacDonald who is averaging 12.4.  Both teams shot incredibly well last time these two teams faced off with the Wildcats shooting 49% from the floor and the Dolphins shooting 53% from the floor.  However, the difference came from beyond the arc where Daemen shot 10-16 and CSI shot 8-14.

The Dolphins are currently on the outside looking in as they battle for an East Coast Conference playoff spot.  CSI is currently tied for sixth place in the conference standings with Queens, but because the Knights won the lone meeting between the two teams, they hold the tie-breaker.
