GAMEDAY: BASEBALL CONTINUES NON-CONFERENCE PLAY WITH DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST DOMINICAN

3/12/2023 6:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team resumes non-conference play this afternoon with a doubleheader against Dominican University of New York.  The Dolphins enter today's game 3-8 coming off a second consecutive split of two games against Caldwell University on Wednesday.  The Chargers come in 1-11 and have not won since their season-opener on February 24th.  The Chargers lead the all-time series 6-4, but the Dolphins won the most recent meeting last season.

Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cougars was a tale of two games for the Dolphins.  The day got started with an 8-run deficit for CSI, but the Dolphins rallied all the way back to win the opening game in eleven innings, 9-8.  The second game quickly got out of hand for the CSI pitching staff and the bats weren't able to stage another comeback as the Dolphins lost 10-0.  The Chargers played each of their last two games against Pace University on Wednesday and Thursday.  The first matchup resulted in a 14-8 Dominican loss and the Chargers lost the second game 11-7.

The CSI offense produced mixed results in their last outing against Caldwell, and the Dolphins come in hitting just .229 as a unit.  Leading the way at the plate is A.J. Vigliotti with a .351 batting average followed by Domenick Castiglione at .351.  Michael Kehoe is the third and final Dolphin hitting over the .300 mark at .333.  Despite a slow start to the current season at the plate, the CSI bats have had recent success against Chargers pitching scoring 10 runs against Dominican last season.  The CSI pitching staff comes in with a 6.31 ERA, but several Dolphin arms have pitched far better than that this year.  Starter Christian Rice, who is likely to see action today, comes in with a 1.80 ERA across 10 innings, and reliever Aidan Kielty enters action with a 1.00 ERA across 9 innings of work.
