DOLPHINS EARN SPLIT OF DOUBLEHEADER VS HOLY FAMILY IN FIRST ACTION SINCE THE SPRING GAMES

Bensalem, PA – The College of Staten Island Softball Team returned to action for the first time since their Florida trip earlier today as they earned a split of a doubleheader against Holy Family University.  The split of the two games brings the Dolphins to 4-8 on the season and the Tigers are now 2-14 following the two games.

GAME 1
The Dolphins opened the first game with a first-inning offensive onslaught as they scored five times before taking the field.  Anissa Acosta singled in the first run before Elizabeth Moore singled home another.  A groundout scored the third Dolphins run and a walk brought home the fourth.  Finally, a Rianne Mayer single drove home the fifth and final run of the inning to put the Dolphins ahead 5-0.  Trailing by five, the Tigers scored a pair of runs in each of their next two turns at bat to make it 5-4 entering the third.  Moore would go on to extend the Dolphins lead back to two with an RBI double in the fourth, and Aileen Balderas made it a three-run game with a run-scoring single.  A wild pitch plated another CSI run in the following inning before a Balderas home run put the Dolphins ahead 9-4 in the sixth.  Mariah Carcano made it 10-4 with an RBI single soon after, and two unearned seventh-inning runs for the Tigers made it a 10-6 final in the Dolphins win.

GAME 2
The Dolphins fell behind quickly in the second game trailing by a pair through one and by four through the first two innings of play.  CSI would get a run back in the third on a groundout, but the Tigers immediately responded with a run of their own in the next half-inning.  A stolen base and the ensuing rundown brought home the sixth Holy Family run to make it 6-1, but the Dolphins would not go down quietly.  Trailing by five, the Dolphins scored three times in the sixth behind a sacrifice fly and back-to-back RBI doubles by Victoria Whalen and Mayer.  The score remained 6-4 entering the seventh, and the Dolphins quickly cut the lead down to one following a walk, single, and sacrifice fly.  Down to their final out, CSI loaded the bases on another walk, but Whalen struck out to end the game as the Dolphins comeback bid fell one run short.

Moore went 2-5 in game one with a pair of RBI's and Balderas went 3-5 for three RBI's.  Moore added two more hits in game two and Balderas reached twice on walks.  Mayer also went a combined 3-6 with two RBI's across the two games.  Alexis Miramontes picked up the game one victory and Alexandra Frenza earned the three-inning save.  In game two, Frenza got the start and suffered the loss after pitching only one inning, but the bullpen of Kelsey Strayer and Madison Edwards combined to allow just two earned runs.

The Dolphins will have a busy weekend coming up as they face Westchester University of Pennsylvania on Saturday before returning to Staten Island for their home-opener against Felician University on Sunday.
