SOFTBALL DROPS TWO GAMES TO WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

West Chester, PA – The College of Staten Island Softball Team played the first of two weekend doubleheaders on their schedule this afternoon and dropped two games to West Chester University of Pennsylvania.  The Dolphins are now 4-10 on the season following the sweep at the hands of the Golden Rams and West Chester improves to 10-7 with the two victories.

GAME 1
West Chester got on the board first in the opening inning of game one by inducing a throw on a stolen base attempt that allowed a run to come home from third.  However, the Dolphins immediately responded with their biggest inning of the season and jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead.  Rianne Mayer and Mariah Carcano each singled home a run to give the Dolphins a one-run lead before Anissa Acosta delivered a grand slam to make it a five-run game.  However, the CSI lead was short-lived and the Golden Rams responded with a five-spot in the second.  Two separate two-RBI doubles and an RBI single evened up the score at 6-6 which is where the score would remain until the fourth inning.  After a leadoff single put the go-ahead run on base, Madison Melvin stole second, and a Dolphins error allowed Melvin to advance to third.  A sacrifice fly brought Melvin home, and neither team would score again the rest of the way as the Dolphins suffered the loss, 7-6.

GAME 2
Acosta opened game two with her second home run of the afternoon in the first inning, but this would be the final time the Dolphins would score.  West Chester went in front for good with two runs in the bottom of the inning and went on two score nine more runs in the second.  Leading 11-1, the Golden Rams added one run in the third and another in the fourth, but they already had all the offense they needed in a five-inning 14-1 victory.

No Dolphin had more than one hit in game one, but Acosta delivered the big blow with her second-inning grand slam.  The Dolphins were held to just three hits in game two, one being the Acosta home run.  In addition to the two home runs, Acosta was the only Dolphin with multiple hits on the day.  In the circle, CSI starting pitching struggled as Alexandra Frenza was chased from her game one start after just two innings.  In game two, Alexis Miramontes lasted only 1.2 innings before leaving the game, but the Dolphins bullpen allowed just four earned runs in 6.1 innings between the two games.

The Dolphins will host their home opener at the CSI Softball Complex tomorrow as they face Felician University at 11 AM.  The start time of tomorrow's doubleheader was originally scheduled for 1 PM, but first pitch of game one was moved up in an effort to avoid the cold evening weather.
