3/24/2023 8:00:00 AM

Flushing, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opens their conference schedule this afternoon with a single game against rival CUNY institution Queens College.  The Dolphins come in 6-9 on the season and have won three of their last four games.  The Knights, who are also playing their first conference game, are 11-4 on the year and have won six straight.  Queens has gotten the better of CSI in the all-time series having won 17 of the 23 meetings between the two sides.

The Dolphins last took the field last Saturday against Chestnut Hill College and earned a split of their doubleheader against the Griffins.  The Dolphins came up a run short in a 4-3 game one loss before picking up a decisive 9-2 victory in game two.  The Knights last played on Tuesday against Adelphi and held on in the late innings for a 5-4 win.

The Dolphins are led in batting by Michael Kehoe who is hitting .444 through the first month of the season.  Freshman A.J. Vigliotti is second in batting at .321 followed by senior Domenick Castiglione at .320.  Rounding out the group of four Dolphins hitting above the .300 mark is Shendi Ulaj with a .316 average.  After a slow start to the season at the plate, the Dolphins are hitting just below the .250 mark as a team entering today's game.  As for the Dolphins pitching staff, freshman Christian Rice has impressed in his first season with the team.  He leads the team in ERA and is tied for the team-lead in wins.  Ryan Kehoe and John Esposito also remain key pieces of the CSI starting rotation, and Aidan Kielty has allowed just one earned run in 9.2 innings out of the Dolphins bullpen.

For the Knights, five players come in hitting above the .298 mark, but no other player on the team is hitting above .200.  Leading the way in batting is Anthony Fontana with a .381 average and 1.133 OPS.  Reed Hoskins leads the team in OPS by a slim margin at 1.139 and comes in hitting .333 on the year.  Francis Segarra also comes in with an OPS over 1.000 to go along with a .345 batting average.  The pitching staff for Queens has been very effective this season including both their starters and bullpen.  Three Knights starters come in with an ERA of 3.20 or better on the season and the Queens pitchers have posted an overall team ERA of 3.83.
