DOLPHINS WIN STREAK ENDS WITH SWEEP BY QUEENS COLLEGE

Flushing, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team saw their four-game winning streak come to an end earlier today as they were swept in their doubleheader against Queens College.  In game one, the Dolphins fell 3-0 and in game two Queens defeated CSI 5-1.  With the two losses, the Dolphins are now to 8-16 overall and 2-4 against the East Coast Conference.  The Knights improve to 4-14 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.

GAME 1
The Knights scored one in the first and two in the second against Dolphins starter Alexis Miramontes, and this was all of the offense they would need.  Miramontes was pulled from the game after just two innings and Madison Edwards came on for the Dolphins in relief.  Edwards gave the Dolphins five scoreless innings, but the CSI offense only managed two hits in the game.  Trailing 3-0, the Dolphins would threaten in both the fifth in the sixth innings.  In the fifth, CSI would bring the tying run to the plate after consecutive walks, but they failed to score.  In the sixth, consecutive singles opened the inning, but a strikeout and double play halted a potential CSI rally.  This would also be the final chance the Dolphins had and they went on to lose by a 3-0 final score.

GAME 2
The Knights scored a first-inning run for the second consecutive game when Ann Grimshaw delivered the first of her three hits and three RBI's with an RBI double.  A Grimshaw solo home run in the third made it 2-0 and an RBI single by Grimshaw in the fifth made it 3-0 giving the Knights all the scoring they would need.  After a Laila Aponte sacrifice fly made it 3-1 in the sixth, the Dolphins went on to load the bases for Natalya Knoth with two outs.  A fly out to center brought the CSI threat to a close, and the Knights would extend the lead to four with two runs in the next half-inning.  Behind 5-1, the Dolphins loaded the bases a second time with two outs in the seventh.  However, Amelia Funston struck out to end the game and the Dolphins lost to the Knights, 5-1.

The Dolphins scored just one run on the day, and 3 of their 10 hits across the two games belonged to Funston who was 3-4 in game two.  No other Dolphin registered a multiple hit game on the day, but Aileen Balderas did have one hit in each of the two games.  In the circle, Madison Edwards was effective in four scoreless innings of relief out of the CSI bullpen in game one.  In game two, Alexandra Frenza pitched a complete game in the loss, her second complete game effort of the season.

The Dolphins continue a week packed with conference games when they play their third ECC doubleheader in four days against St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday.
