DOLPHINS DROP A PAIR TO SPARTANS IN THE LAST OF SIX STRAIGHT CONFERENCE GAMES

Sparkill, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team wrapped up a six-game run of conference matchups with a pair of losses to St. Thomas Aquinas College earlier today.  With the two defeats the Dolphins fall to 8-18 on the season and 2-6 against the East Coast Conference.  The Spartans are now 11-7 on the year and 4-0 against conference opponents.  The win also extends the Spartans win streak over CSI to six games.

GAME 1
The Dolphins opened the game with two baserunners coming on a leadoff single and an error.  After a strikeout and a groundout, Alyssa Acosta came through with an RBI single to plate the game's first run.  On the same play, a second run came home on a Spartans error.  Amelia Funston then singled home one more to give the Dolphins a 3-0 lead, but this is the final time the Dolphins would score.  CSI maintained their lead heading into the bottom of the second, but the Spartans registered a pair of two-out, two-RBI hits to take the lead, 4-3.  That lead would stand until the home fourth when a series of stolen bases helped the Spartans score two more runs to go in front by three.  Trailing 6-3, the Dolphins would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but an RBI groundout was the only damage they would do in the 6-4 loss.

GAME 2
The Spartans scored twice in the first inning to go ahead for good, but they would add plenty to their lead in a tumultuous bottom of the second inning.  Following a leadoff walk, an error and another walk loaded the bases.  From here, the inning spiraled out of control for the Dolphins as the STAC lead ballooned to nine.  The Spartans scored twice more in the third, and Spartan pitching limited the Dolphins to just three hits in an 11-0 CSI loss.

Mariah Carcano and Amelia Funston each had two hits in game one, but the Dolphin bats went cold at the plate during game two.  In the circle, Alexis Miramontes suffered the loss in game one and Alexandra Frenza allowed just one run in three innings of relief.  In game two, Anissa Acosta took the loss and Madison Edwards provided 2.1 innings of effective relief.

The Dolphins will have the weekend off before returning to action in non-conference play on Monday against Chestnut Hill College.  First pitch of game one against the Griffins will be at 2:00 PM.
