SOFTBALL SCORES 16 TIMES IN SEASON-OPENING SWEEP OF ALLIANCE UNIVERSITY

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Softball Team opened their season as the road team on their home turf earlier today and picked up a pair of victories in a sweep of Alliance University.  The Dolphins scored 16 times, eight runs in each game, to defeat the Warriors 8-0 in five innings, and 8-1.  The Dolphins open their season 2-0 and will look to carry the momentum of today's wins into The Spring Games next week.  The Warriors fall to 0-4 to start their season with the pair of losses.

GAME 1
After going down in order to open the game, the Dolphins faced a first-inning threat from the Warriors following a leadoff walk.  After the next batter was retired, the Dolphins completed one of the most unconventional plays in softball, a 9-3-5 double play on a ground ball to right field.  This set the tone for the rest of the game and the Dolphins immediately struck for three runs in the following half-inning.  In her first career at-bat Aileen Balderas connected on a solo home-run to center field.  Alyssa Acosta followed with a triple in her first at-bat as a Dolphin before consecutive doubles chased home two more runs.  Acosta singled home another run in the following inning to make it 4-0, and the Dolphins scored four more in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead.  The fourth-inning rally was punctuated by the first home run of the season for Elizabeth Moore, and Alexis Miramontes completed the five-inning shutout to earn CSI an 8-0 win.

GAME 2

Game two saw the Dolphins strike for three runs in the opening inning, all coming on a bases-clearing triple by Avery Mochrie.  Neither team would score again until the third when a walk forced in the fourth CSI run.  Alliance scored for the first time in that same inning when a wild pitch brought home the first Warriors run of the afternoon.  Balderas continued her stellar CSI debut with an RBI-double in the sixth to make it 5-1 and an Anissa Acosta sacrifice fly made it 6-1 soon after.  Balderas eventually came home on a wild pitch to make it 7-1 and Acosta drove in a second run in the seventh with an RBI-single.  Alexandra Frenza went the distance for the Dolphins in the circle and picked up her first victory with a one-run complete game effort.

GAME 2 VIDEO

The Dolphins 16-run outburst is the second-most runs they have scored in a doubleheader during the last two seasons.  The only time they scored more was against Felician University last season.  In a split with the Golden Falcons, the Dolphins scored 19 runs across two games.  Game one saw a pair of Dolphins deliver their first home run of the season, and both Amelia Funston and Moore had two hits in the five-inning contest.  In game two, Mochrie finished 3-4 at the plate with 3 RBI's and Alyssa Acosta, Anissa Acosta, and Mariah Carcano each had two hits.

Next up for the Dolphins is their 8-game trip to Florida for The Spring Games.  The Dolphins will face teams from throughout the country and will look to continue their strong start to the season.  The Spring Games will be video streamed in their entirety on FloSports Softball.  Audio will also be available via CSI Sportsnet on Youtube for all eight games beginning on Monday afternoon.
