GAMEDAY: BASEBALL HOSTS WEEKEND SERIES OPENER AGAINST MOLLOY

3/31/2023 6:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opens a four-game weekend series against the Molloy University Lions this afternoon at the CSI Baseball Complex.  The Dolphins enter today's single game 7-12 on the season and 1-3 against the East Coast Conference.  The Lions come in 16-9 overall and a perfect 4-0 against conference opponents.  CSI will be looking for their first win in program history over Molloy in today's game as they come winless against the Lions in six games.

The Dolphins last took the field on Monday against Queens College and lost to the Knights for the third time in four games.  The Dolphins fell behind big early, and though they were able to regain their footing, they never got within striking distance in an 11-3 loss.  The Lions last played on Wednesday against Goldey-Beacom and suffered a one-run loss, 10-9.  Prior to that game, Molloy had won four straight following a sweep of Mercy College in conference play.

Michael Kehoe and Vincent Weigele are the leading hitters for CSI with both hitting around the .380 mark on the season.  Shendi Ulaj and A.J. Vigliotti also continue to maintain averages above the .300 mark, and three of CSI's four leading hitters have driven in at least 10 runs.  Domenick Castiglione is the team leader in hits with 18 and comes in hitting a respectable .286 on the season.  The Dolphins have three starting pitchers who have been very effective this year led by reigning East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week John Esposito.  Both Ryan Kehoe and Christian Rice have also pitched well this season and are third and fourth on the team in ERA among qualifiers.  Esposito is second in that category trailing only reliever Aidan Kielty who enters the day with a 3.65 ERA.

The Lions have six players have started at least 22 of the team's 26 games and only two other players have started at least half.  Of those six regular starters, five are hitting above the .300 mark led by JJ Devito.  Garrett Scavelli and Aidan Larkin are both hitting close to .350 and as a team the Lions are hitting .314.  Like the Dolphins, the top three starters for Molloy have been solid this season.  Charlie Cucchiara and Brian Morrisey both come in with ERA's well below 3.00, but the overall team ERA for Molloy sits just above 5.00.
