GAMEDAY: BASEBALL FACES BLOOMFIELD IN HOME-OPENER AT SIUH COMMUNITY PARK

3/4/2023 6:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team has returned from their Myrtle Beach trip and is set to host their home-opener today against the Bloomfield College Bears.  Today's games will be played at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park, the home of the Staten Island Ferry Hawks.  Fans will not be permitted at the game unless they are attending the HawkFest event or have received a ticket from the venue.  One team will earn their second win as the Dolphins enter today's doubleheader 1-4 and the Bears come in with a record of 1-5.

History favors the Bears in this matchup as they lead the all-time series 8-3, but last year's doubleheader was the first time these two teams have met in over 20 years.  In game one, the Dolphins picked up a 7-1 victory behind six innings of one-run ball from John Esposito.  In game two, the Bears were able to slow down the CSI bats and earned a 5-2 win.  Those games grew progressively more contentious over the course of the day adding a bit of extra intrigue to this year's matchup.

Domenick Castiglione is off to a strong start this season with eight hits, two for extra bases, in his first 18 at-bats of the season.  In a much smaller sample size, Anthony Vigliotti is 3-7 with 3 RBI's in his brief CSI career and fellow freshman Vincent Weigele is 2-6 with a pair of RBI's.  Returners Bryan Birkhead and Nick Cippoletti each had at least three hits during the team's Myrtle Beach trip as well, but the Dolphins finished the five games hitting just .212 as a team.  Esposito is likely to get a start for the Dolphins today against a team he performed very well against last season.  Ryan Kehoe may also see some action on the mound in today's games and his is coming off both a shutout win and East Coast Conference Weekly Honor Roll mention.

The CSI pitching staff will be forced to contend with Tyree Bradley who is off to a red-hot start.  Bradley is hitting .389 and all seven of his hits, 3 of which have been home runs, have gone for extra bases.  Four different Bears have gone deep this season, but the hot start has been limited to the team's performance at the plate.  The Bloomfield pitching staff has pitched to an ERA of nearly 15.00 through their first six games and will be looking to turn things around against a Dolphins team that is off to a slow start offensively.
