DOLPHINS SEE POSTSEASON HOPES TAKE MASSIVE HIT WITH TWO LOSSES TO KNIGHTS

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team faced Queens College in a crucial conference doubleheader earlier today and saw their hopes of a postseason berth take a massive hit with two losses to their CUNY rival.  After losing game one 5-1, the Dolphins were shut out 3-0 in game two.  The two losses drop the Dolphins to 11-31 on the season and 3-13 against the East Coast Conference. The Knights are now 9-27 on the year and 6-10 in conference play.

GAME 1
The Knights struck first in the third inning following a leadoff double by Emma Zumpol and an RBI single by Cyarra Alvarado.  One inning later, the Dolphins got even on an unconventional home run when Anissa Acosta hit a sinking line drive to center field.  Attempting a diving catch in center field, Dyana Budakoswki knocked the ball all the away into the right field corner.  This allowed Acosta to score on an inside-the-park home run.  The score remained tied at one until the seventh when Ann Grimshaw cleared the bases with an 3-RBI double.  The Knights then tacked on one more run to go ahead by four and took the win by a final score of 5-1.

GAME 2
After picking up a complete game victory in game one, Allyson Dilday started for a second consecutive game in the second half of the doubleheader.  CSI was able to mount some early threats against her, but the Dolphins failed to score.  Dilday would get stronger as the game went on, but CSI starter Anissa Acosta was up to the challenge.  The Dolphins starter was perfect for the first four innings, and the game went to the fifth with no score.  A leadoff double in that inning put the go-ahead run in scoring position and a sacrifice fly ultimately gave Queens the lead for good.  The Knights would go on to add one more run in each of the next two innings, and the Dolphins would come to bat trailing 3-0 in the seventh.  CSI would get the tying run to the plate in the inning, but they wouldn't threaten any further as they went on to lose 3-0.

Amelia Funston had two of the three Dolphin hits in game one and reached base in her first four at-bats of the day.  The Dolphins then had eight hits in game two, three belonging to Alyssa Acosta and two to Anissa Acosta.  Acosta also pitched well enough to win in game two but did not receive any run support.  In game one, Alexadnra Frenza was victimized by walks and a key error late in the game, but she pitched very well through the first five innings.

The Dolphins will get a chance to bounce back tomorrow as they will be right back in action on their home turf against The College of Saint Rose.
