DOLPHINS SCORE JUST ONCE IN TWO LOSSES TO SPARTANS

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team played the first of two remaining doubleheaders on their schedule earlier today as they took on the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College at the CSI Softball Complex.  The CSI offense was held to just a single run as they suffered a pair of defeats, 7-1 and 7-0.  With the losses, CSI falls to 11-35 overall and 3-15 against the East Coast Conference.  The Spartans improve their record to 24-15-1 on the season and 11-4-1 against the conference.  With a loss in game one, the Dolphins were eliminated from playoff contention in the ECC.

GAME 1
The Spartans opened the scoring in game one with a first-inning solo home run by Abbie Landrum to go in front 1-0, and they would lead the rest of the way.  STAC then added five runs in the second inning on three soft base hits to ahead 6-0, and the Dolphins would not get within striking distance again after that.  CSI's best chance came in the third inning when the first two Dolphins to bat reached on singles.  With runners on second and third, a ground ball to second resulted in a play at the plate that saw the Spartans cut down Victoria Whalen trying to score.  An Anissa Acosta single brought home a run moments later, but one was all the Dolphins would get in the inning.  This would also be the last time the Dolphins would score, and Kelsey Strayer would hold the Spartans to just one more run the rest of the way in a 7-1 loss.

GAME 2
The Spartans scored a single run in the first inning of game two to go in front 1-0, and this was all the run support Landrum would need in the circle.  Leading by one, the Spartans scored three more in the second, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth. The Dolphins offense would muster just one hit in the game as they went on to lose in a shutout, 7-0.

Alyssa Acosta had two hits for the Dolphins in game one and Anissa Acosta drove in her team-leading 30th run of the season.  Strayer allowed just four hits in five innings in relief of Alexandra Frenza and Charissa Della Vecchia picked up the win for the Spartans behind 13 strikeouts.  Amelia Funston had the only CSI hit in game two as Landrum threw a complete game shutout for the Sprtans to earn the win.  Adriana Coira also had a three-hit game for the Spartans in their second consecutive seven-run effort.

The Dolphins will take the field for the final time this season on Saturday when they host Mercy College in East Coast Conference play.  Game one will get underway at 12 PM with coverage beginning at the start of the Dolphins Senior Day celebration.
