SOFTBALL EARNS SPLIT AGAINST GOLDEY-BEACOM BEHIND COMPLETE GAME EFFORT FROM ACOSTA

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team returned home this afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom College.  After surrendering an early lead in game one, the Dolphins took the win in game two behind a complete game effort from starter Anissa Acosta.  With today's split, the Dolphins end the day 11-23 and the Lightning finish the day 24-18.

GAME 1
The Lightning scored twice before the Dolphins came to bat as the visitors struck for two runs in the first inning.  The Lightning opened the game with consecutive hits, a single and a double, before a pair of ground outs brought home the first two runs of the game.  Anissa Acosta doubled with one out in the home first for CSI, and back-to-back RBI hits by Aileen Balderas and Amelia Funston tied the score at two.

After the Lightning failed to score in the second, Balderas doubled home two more CSI runs in the bottom half of the inning, and a hit batter gave the Dolphins a 5-2 lead.  A Victoria Whalen double opened the home third, and she was chased home on a groundout to give the Dolphins a 6-2 advantage.  This lead would stand until the fifth when the Lightning rallied for seven runs to account for the rest of the scoring in game one.  Behind the biggest inning of the day for either team, Goldey-Beacom picked up the win 10-6.

GAME 2
After a scoreless top half of the first, the Dolphins opened the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles.  Following a strikeout, Funston would drive in the game's first run with a groundout to put the Dolphins ahead 1-0.  The first major threat to that lead came in the bottom of the third when the Dolphins opened the inning with an error on the infield.  A sacrifice bunt moved the tying run into scoring position, and a Lightning base hit set up a play at the plate.  It took a perfect relay throw, but the Dolphins cut down the tying run at the plate for the second out.
With two away and a runner in scoring position, Mariah Carcano robbed Nicole Makin of an RBI hit with an incredible diving catch to end the inning.

The Dolphins would maintain their 1-0 until the fifth when Acosta and Elizabeth Moore each drove in a run with an RBI single.  With CSI leading 3-0, the Lightning scored for the first and only time in the sixth.  The Dolphins responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and Acosta closed out a 5-1 CSI win with a scoreless seventh.

Balderas had two hits and three RBI in the first of the two games and Riane Mayer had two hits as well.  Carcano added three hits in game two, and she scored two runs in addition to her spectacular diving catch.  Acosta did it all for the Dolphins in game two finishing with two hits and an RBI.  In the circle, she gave the Dolphins a complete game effort in which she allowed just one run on five hits.

The Dolphins will be off until Tuesday when they resume conference play with a home doubleheader against Molloy University.  First pitch of game one will be at 2 PM.
