GAMEDAY: DOLPHINS HOST ALLIANCE UNIVERSITY ON INAUGURAL HEROES DAY

4/8/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team hosts the inaugural Heroes Day this afternoon at the CSI Baseball Complex as they take on Alliance University in a non-conference doubleheader.  A pregame ceremony will begin ahead of first pitch at approximately 11:45 AM and will honor late firefighters Steve Sosa and Anthony.Iraci and Port Authority Officer Anthony Varvaro.  The Dolphins come in 8-17 on the season and the Warriors enter today's doubleheader with a record of 1-30.  Today will be the second time these two teams have faced one another with the Dolphins taking the win 16-6 in their lone meeting last season..

The Dolphins faced East Stroudsburg University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday and didn't generate much offense in the two games against the Warriors.  After an 11-0 loss in game one, a 4-1 deficit in game two turned into a 9-3 defeat.  Alliance was also last in action on Wednesday when they dropped a pair of games to Post University in CACC play.

Reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week A.J. Vigliotti registered yet another two-hit game against East Stroudsburg on Wednesday and leads the Dolphins with an even .400 batting average.  Michael Kehoe and Vincent Weigele continue to hit well above .300 and Kehoe made a pair of tremendous defensive plays in center field in CSI's last outing against East Stroudsburg.  Shendi Ulaj is also hitting well above .300 with 12 RBI and has hit safely in four of his last five games.  After getting the day off on Wednesday, it is likely that John Esposito and Ryan Kehoe will both get work in today's doubleheader.  Among pitchers with a qualifying innings total, the duo leads the Dolphins in ERA and Kehoe comes in as the reigning East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week.

The Warriors are led in batting by Sam Abreu who enters today's games hitting .359 on the year.  He also leads the team in OPS at .924 and in slugging percentage at .551.  The Warriors' pitching staff has struggled this year as a unit with an ERA of 14.69, and they only have three pitchers who have made more than three starts in the team's 31 games.  Following today's games, Alliance will have another non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday against Lock Haven University before five days off ahead of their next games against conference foe Dominican College.  This should free up the Warriors to dig deeper into their pitching depth during today's matchups with the Dolphins.
